About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring customers have continuous access to innovation. This role involves working on challenging problems within a diverse team of engineers and specialists. The Product Design Engineer will focus on creating innovative medium-voltage switchgear, power distribution equipment, transformers, and protection systems for AWS's global data center network. This includes collaborating with cross-functional teams, evaluating design modifications, and partnering with manufacturers and testing laboratories to ensure compliance with international standards. The role contributes to the electrical systems that enable millions of customers to access cloud services reliably and efficiently.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
  • 4+ years of commissioning experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer License
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • Able to interpret electric code NEC, NFPA, UL891, UL508, UL1066, UL1558, ANSI C37, and other IEC codes.

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal partner teams to solicit customer input and define design requirements for product design.
  • Lead new product design, development and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS datacenters including LV and MV switchgear, power distribution cabinets and panels.
  • Develop Capex and Opex spending budgets taking into account development costs with vendors, prototyping needs, testing and specialized tooling requirements.
  • Work with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring tier 2-3 supply chain resiliency.
  • Ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC and federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes across different countries through appropriate levels of testing.
  • Validate design through prototype, pre-production and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
  • Work with field engineering and commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical products.
  • Ability to provide support for manufacturing activities for the new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographical locations.
  • Be a leader within the product development team as well as within internal and external teams that support the data center.
