Product Data Scientist - Youth, Families and Learning

OpenAI•San Francisco, CA
•$401,000 - $510,000

About The Position

OpenAI is seeking a product data scientist to create value and drive sustainable growth for young people, families, and learners. The role spans under-18 audiences, emerging opportunities for children under 13, family experiences, and learning and education. The scientist will help determine where to invest, what to build, and how to assess whether it is working by understanding audience needs, identifying promising use cases, and turning evidence into product strategy. The work connects discovery and early product development with adoption, retention, and sustained user value. The role partners with Chat Product, Growth, Foundations, SafeSys, and other teams, working closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and researchers. It owns product value and growth, while dedicated teams own policy and safety. Responsibilities include prioritizing opportunities, defining audience-specific measures of value, analyzing journeys and growth drivers, evaluating product and model changes, translating findings into decisions, improving measurement infrastructure, and aligning teams across roadmaps.

Requirements

  • A record of influencing product strategy and improving user outcomes through hands-on data science, from ambiguous questions to decisions and measurable impact.
  • Strong SQL and Python skills.
  • Sound statistical judgment and practical experience with experiments, causal inference, cohort analysis, and measurement design.
  • Ability to develop useful definitions of product value, validate imperfect proxies, and distinguish short-term metric changes from lasting improvement.
  • Clear communication and strong product judgment, including the ability to make recommendations, explain limitations, and influence cross-functional collaborators without formal authority.
  • Comfort independently setting priorities across a broad scope, staying close to users, and moving between strategic questions and detailed analytical work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with consumer product growth, youth or family products, learning and education, or generative AI.
  • Experience measuring learning outcomes, combining quantitative and qualitative research, or evaluating products whose value emerges over time.

Responsibilities

  • Size unmet needs and growth opportunities across audiences, use cases, and product experiences; help prioritize investment and sequence work based on user value, reach, evidence, and effort.
  • Develop audience-specific measurement frameworks spanning activation, task success, learning progress, satisfaction, and durable retention; connect measures to product goals and assess whether repeat use reflects meaningful benefit.
  • Analyze user journeys, funnels, and cohorts to identify where people find value, encounter difficulty, and what encourages them to return; combine behavioral data with surveys and user research.
  • Design experiments and holdouts to evaluate product and model changes, and use causal methods when randomization is impractical while accounting for assumptions, seasonality, audience composition, and segment differences.
  • Partner with teams from initial hypotheses through launch and iteration; recommend what to build, change, expand, or stop, explain expected impact, uncertainty, and tradeoffs, and assess whether decisions achieved intended results.
  • Partner with engineering on instrumentation, dataset quality, and consistent audience definitions; create reusable analyses and dashboards.
  • Align teams around audience value, priorities, success criteria, and unresolved questions across multiple roadmaps, including when ownership is distributed or evidence is incomplete.
