The Produce Manager is responsible for achieving desired gross profit and productivity levels within the produce department. This role involves projecting sales, managing product movement and labor needs, ordering and receiving product, and establishing daily work assignments and priorities for department personnel. The Produce Manager also oversees all personnel-related functions, including interviewing, hiring, training, performance evaluation, discipline, and discharge, following established guidelines. Additionally, the role requires meticulous record-keeping, preparing weekly work schedules, stocking and pricing merchandise, rotating stock to ensure freshness, and performing basic housekeeping duties. Safe operation of all required tools and equipment is essential, with the ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds. Maintaining appropriate temperatures in coolers and cases, working in temperature extremes (down to 32 degrees in the produce cooler), and performing job functions while standing or walking at a rapid pace for extended periods are also key aspects of the position. Secondary functions include maintaining a neat work area, performing tasks with speed and accuracy, and the ability to lift items over 50 pounds.
