About The Position

Forty Acres Fresh Market (FAFM) is an independent, Black woman-owned grocery business dedicated to restoring healthy food access across Chicagoland. As FAFM opens its first brick-and-mortar store in Chicago's Austin neighborhood in 2025, they are seeking an enthusiastic, detail, and results-oriented Produce/Floral Department Assistant. This role supports the development and operations of the department in a new store, focusing on providing high-quality, fresh food and a positive grocery experience. The Assistant will support daily operations, including the preparation of packaged cut fruit, juices, and smoothies, while providing outstanding customer service and working alongside the Produce/Floral Department Manager. Key responsibilities include managing department inventory, margin, pricing integrity, and adherence to merchandising standards, all while embodying FAFM's values of Quality, Sustainability, Community Engagement, and Integrity.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • 1-2 years relevant retail experience
  • Must be capable of providing and modeling exceptional customer service
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with customers, store leadership, and team members.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in groups.
  • Ability to facilitate a positive work environment with outstanding teamwork and mutual respect.
  • Proficiency in computer and math skills for accurate inventory management, pricing, and ordering.
  • Knowledge of basic math, particularly fractions and margin formulas
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal)

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years of grocery experience in perishable department (Meat/Seafood, Produce, Deli)

Responsibilities

  • Model and provide exceptional customer service by addressing customer concerns and questions.
  • Ensure product quality by managing inventory, proper rotation, and culling for bad or out of date products.
  • Consistently maintain product signage, pricing, and COOL information (country of origin).
  • Assist the Produce Manager in overseeing a profitable and revenue-generating department by helping maintain margins and reducing shrink or waste.
  • Support the Produce Manager in inventory control and product freshness by assisting in product ordering.
  • Follow and maintain procedures and processes that are implemented by the Produce Manager and Store Leadership to minimize department shrink.
  • Responsible for assigning daily tasks to team members to ensure efficient workflow during the day.
  • Maintain safety, sanitation and regulatory standards, including proper handling and labeling of products.
  • Keep both floral and produce displays clean, organized, and visually appealing.
  • Other duties related to general store operations as assigned by management.
