About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is recruiting for a Processing Technician to work within the State Police Bureau of Identification (SPBI) in Middletown, CT. The SPBI is the state’s repository of criminal history information, maintaining and sharing criminal history information to protect citizens. The role involves processing state and federal criminal history record checks for various agencies and organizations, with over 75 statutes authorizing background checks for employment and licensing. The Processing Technician will be responsible for the maintenance and dissemination of criminal history information to authorized entities. This is a full-time, first shift position (40 hours/week, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday) at State Police Headquarters in Middletown, CT. Duties include receiving requests, researching criminal arrest and disposition information, data input, and sending results from electronic repository systems. The role involves daily interaction with requesters such as law enforcement officers, state, federal, and municipal agencies, the general public, and other requesting agencies. The technician will also research information using available systems and request information from contributing police departments, the Connecticut Judicial Branch, Department of Correction, Board of Pardons and Parole, and federal agencies. Requirements

  • Three (3) years of clerical work experience.
  • One (1) year of the General Experience must have involved a full range of clerical duties.

Responsibilities

  • Examining incoming materials for accuracy, completeness and conformance to state statutes and regulations.
  • Making corrections and/or additions to incoming materials.
  • Devising follow-up procedures to efficiently and effectively carry out activities.
  • Initiating and maintaining communications with a wide variety of resources to verify information and complete transactions, including other state employees, offices, and outside officials such as attorneys, judicial and social welfare officials or representatives.
  • Interpreting and applying state statutes and regulations relating to the particular processing service.
  • Making decisions as to case status, transaction permissibility or admissibility.
  • Responding to internal and external inquiries for information and assistance.
  • Setting up and maintaining office procedures, filing and indexing systems and forms for office use and to meet recurring needs.
  • Maintaining calendars of due dates and initiating recurring work or special clerical projects accordingly.
  • Maintaining records and logs.
  • Preparing status or statistical reports related to processing function.
  • Assisting in maintaining general files in support of processing function.
  • Initiating correspondence in carrying out duties.
  • Typing correspondence, forms, file documentation, etc., in support of processing function.
  • Processing fees and maintaining financial records (may be required).
  • Leading lower-level clerical employees assisting in carrying out processing responsibilities (may be required).
