Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum or related) or HES related field with no relevant years of experience; or High School diploma or GED with 5 years of relevant experience in a process industry (e.g., refining, midstream or petrochemical).
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Travel requirements: 50%
  • Professional Level 1 (P1): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum or related) or HES related field with no relevant years of experience; or High School diploma or GED with 5 years of relevant experience in a process industry (e.g., refining, midstream or petrochemical)
  • Professional Level 2 (P2): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum or related) with at least 2 years of relevant years of experience; or Bachelor’s degree in HES related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience in a process industry; or High School diploma or GED with 10 years of relevant experience in a process industry
  • Working knowledge and experience implementing process safety elements
  • General understanding and application of the process, process hazards, corrosion mechanisms and safeguards for the type of facility/unit(s) assigned
  • Understands and applies qualitative and quantitative process safety risk evaluation methods on simple scenarios and processes (e.g. MOC, PHA, LOPA, risk calibration, facility siting)
  • Understands PSM and RMP regulatory requirements as well as industry recommended practices related to process safety
  • Professional Level 3 (P3): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, HES related field, or advanced degree with 7 years relevant environmental experience or High School diploma or GED with 15 years of relevant experience in a process industry
  • Detailed knowledge and experience implementing multiple Process Safety elements
  • Detailed understanding of the process, process hazards, corrosion mechanisms and safeguards for the type of facility/unit(s) assigned
  • Skilled in conducting, facilitating and/or applying qualitative and quantitative process safety risk evaluations (e.g., MOC, PHA, LOPA, risk calibration, dispersion modeling, facility siting, etc.)
  • Detailed knowledge of the PSM and RMP regulatory requirements and interpretations, as well as industry recommended practices related to process safety
  • Professional Level 4 (P4): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, HES related field, or advanced degree with 15 years relevant environmental experience; or High School diploma or GED with 20 years of relevant experience in a process industry
  • Skilled at conducting/facilitating complex process safety qualitative and quantitative risk evaluations (e.g., PHA, LOPA, risk calibration, dispersion modeling, facility siting, etc.)
  • Ability to prioritize and justify process safety risk reduction projects based on risk reduction factors, economic analyses, regulatory requirements, and implementation timelines
  • Expertise and experience applying all Process Safety Elements. Recognized as a Subject Matter Expert within the organization
  • Ability to lead the development, implementation, and oversight of organizational and/or company-wide process safety standards and programs
  • Consistently sought out by company and organizational leaders to provide technical and strategic input
  • Professional Level 5 (P5): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, HES related field, or advanced degree with 20 years relevant environmental experience; or High School diploma or GED with 25 years of relevant experience in a process industry
  • Subject Matter Expert in multiple PSM elements
  • Ability to lead the development, implementation, and oversight of process safety programs across the company and for industry
  • Shapes and guards the company and industry’s process safety risk profile through influencing of process safety risk mitigation requirements in various technical disciplines and engineering standards

Responsibilities

  • Leads process safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance with all elements of Process Safety Management (PSM)/Risk Management Plan (RMP), and conformance with external & internal standards.
  • Advises on interpretation and application of internal and external standards, including Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).
  • Maintains and continuously improves local/ organization’s process safety standards/plans.
  • Conducts, facilitates, and/or coordinates process safety hazard risk identification and mitigation activities, including facility siting, PHA (Process Hazard Analysis), LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis), Management of Change (MOC), and risk calibration.
  • Collaborates with facility personnel to ensure process safety recommendations are closed adequately in a timely manner.
  • Interacts frequently with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering personnel and others to help resolve process safety issues and instill a healthy process safety culture.
  • Communicates, elevates, and mitigates process safety risks as appropriate.
  • Identifies, develops, and delivers training on process safety to stakeholders.
  • Leads/participates in incident investigations, root cause analyses and reporting.
  • Critically reviews investigation root causes and recommendations and challenges the organization to learn from incidents and prevent recurrence.
  • Conducts and/or validates process safety leak calculations and categorization with industry standards.
  • Tracks and analyzes process safety metrics to identify trends, strengths, and improvement opportunities.
  • Develops reports to effectively communicate metrics and trends.
  • Leads and coordinates conformance and compliance audits and assurance activities for process safety.
  • Supports facilities with regulatory inspection and/or enforcement actions.
  • Participates in specialty industry groups to share and learn good process safety practices, advocates for sound regulations or updates to industry standards.
