About The Position

Brown and Caldwell (BC) has an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Process Mechanical Engineer to join our team. This is a great opportunity to work for an environmentally focused engineering consulting firm. The successful candidate will work on various water/wastewater projects for municipal and federal clients. We offer a collaborative, multi-discipline environment to develop innovative, cost-effective designs for new facilities, expansions, upgrades and retrofits. This Process Mechanical Engineering role will take on responsibilities in the design and construction phase support of simple and now adding complex discrete process-mechanical elements of environmental infrastructure projects. The role will lead for simple, and provide assistance, for complex discrete process-mechanical elements throughout planning and study projects as well as conceptual design, preliminary design, and final design phases. This includes evaluating options to determine appropriate processes and equipment for process mechanical design elements, developing design drawings and specifications, and tasks such as preparing calculations to size and select equipment, piping, and appurtenances. Additionally, this role will require directing BIM professionals to create 3D models and interdisciplinary coordination with architects, structural engineers, electrical and instrumentation and controls engineers, and building-mechanical engineers to implement project scope within allowable schedules and budgets. During construction phases, this role will also perform simple submittal reviews, respond to simple contractor inquiries, and provide in-person site observations. A Hybrid work arrangement is allowed from our Salt Lake City office.

Requirements

Proficient use of word processing and spreadsheet-based software tools.
Intermediate understanding of process mechanical engineering principles and practices.
Intermediate analytical skills in evaluating and designing processes for infrastructure projects.
Basic use of process-mechanical software analysis tools.
Ability to work well with interdisciplinary teams.
Basic understanding of the construction process for environmental infrastructure projects.
Typically requires minimum of 2 years of process mechanical engineering or related experience.
Experience in coordinating with interdisciplinary teams required.
Typically will become certified in BC's Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) Framework and progress through the SMS competencies.
A bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent experience is required.
Engineer in Training (EIT) License.

Nice To Haves

4+ years of process mechanical engineering or related experience.
Professional Engineer License in the state of Utah.
Prior design experience with pumping, water and wastewater treatment equipment, aeration and plant air compressor/blowers, piping system design, pressure control/relief, and development of technical specifications.
Strong project or task management and communication skills.
Successful technical writing skills.
Knowledgeable of AFT Fathom and Visual Hydraulics software applications and use.
Experience working in BIM collaboration tools (BIM 360 and NavisworksForma).

Responsibilities

Lead the design of simple process-mechanical elements.
Lead in preparing simple calculations for and selection of piping and equipment as per project requirements.
Lead the coordination of interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive solutions for simple design elements.
Lead the guidance of BIM professionals for creating accurate and efficient 3D models and contract design documents for simple design elements.
Lead the review of simple construction phase submittits to ensure adherence to project specifications.
Lead the response to simple contractor requests for information during the construction phase.
Lead site observations during the construction phase for simple design elements.
Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
