About The Position

ATI is hiring a Process Engineering Intern for its Specialty Materials operations in Monroe, North Carolina. The 10-week internship takes place in Summer 2027 and focuses on manufacturing process engineering in ATI’s Monroe VIM and Remelt operations. The intern will work alongside Operations and Engineering teams to improve manufacturing processes, strengthen quality consistency, and solve production challenges through projects intended to deliver measurable impact on the manufacturing floor. Depending on the project assignment, work may include creating visual standards for shop-floor quality metrics and refreshing operating requirements; developing a measurement tool to check VAR furnace tilt and alignment; identifying process improvement opportunities during ESR startup; analyzing process data; improving standard operating procedures; and investigating process issues with Operations and Engineering teams. The internship provides exposure to nickel melting technologies, including VIM, VAR, and ESR, and may offer an opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineer position after graduation.

Requirements

  • Be a B.S. or graduate candidate in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Be able to work in plant and shop-floor environments.

Nice To Haves

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Strong interest in thermo-mechanical processing of metals.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Python, or Minitab/JMP for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with stress-strain behavior, microstructure-property relationships, and process modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Operations to create visual standards for shop-floor quality metrics and refresh operating requirements.
  • Develop a measurement tool for Technology and Maintenance to check VAR furnace tilt and alignment and help prevent misaligned melting and potential furnace damage.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities during ESR startup to improve consistency and manufacturing performance.
  • Analyze process data to identify trends, improvement opportunities, and potential sources of variation.
  • Develop or improve standard operating procedures to support consistent execution of manufacturing processes.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to investigate process issues and develop practical solutions.

Benefits

  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing process engineering within ATI’s Monroe VIM and Remelt operations.
  • Practical experience with data analysis, problem solving, and investigative failure analysis.
  • Exposure to nickel melting technologies, including VIM, VAR, and ESR processes.
  • Experience developing standard operating procedures and visual standards to improve quality consistency and execution.
  • Opportunities to apply materials science principles to real-world manufacturing challenges.
  • Collaboration with Operations and Engineering teams on projects designed to deliver measurable impact.
  • Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineer position at ATI after graduation.
