About The Position

Johnson Controls is seeking a Process Engineering Co-op to support the development, optimization, and standardization of advanced manufacturing processes. In this role, you will work closely with engineering teams to improve process performance, support production scale-up efforts, and develop testing and analysis methods that drive product quality and operational excellence. This position offers hands-on experience in process development, materials characterization, quality control, statistical analysis, and manufacturing innovation. The ideal candidate is curious, adaptable, and excited to solve technical challenges in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects and complete assignments efficiently and effectively.
  • Adaptable and able to excel in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly document technical processes and findings.
  • Coursework or academic background in materials science, mechanical engineering, manufacturing processes, or controls systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Interest in materials characterization, process optimization, and manufacturing technologies.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous co-op, internship, research, or industry experience.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, or quality engineering methodologies.
  • Exposure to metallography, microscopy, materials testing, or laboratory analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with data collection, process monitoring, and quality metrics.
  • Experience with Python, Linux, Excel, Jira, Git, or PLC programming.
  • Interest in advanced manufacturing, process development, and production scale-up activities.

Responsibilities

  • Tune manufacturing process parameters to improve performance, consistency, and production outcomes.
  • Support quality control initiatives and process improvement efforts related to production scale-up activities.
  • Develop and perform surface characterization testing and metallographic inspections.
  • Conduct electron microscopy and optical microscopy analysis to evaluate material and process performance.
  • Develop, document, and execute mechanical testing methods.
  • Design and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) and perform statistical analysis to support process optimization.
  • Utilize manufacturing equipment, hardware, and software to produce sample parts and test specimens.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to evaluate machine performance and recommend improvements.
  • Develop automated data collection, reporting, and statistical analysis tools to monitor quality metrics.
  • Document testing results, process changes, and engineering findings in a clear and effective manner.
