About The Position

HF Sinclair is seeking a Process Engineer for the Engineering Department. This role involves monitoring and ensuring the performance of high complexity refinery process units, investigating and resolving process-related malfunctions, and coordinating Process Hazard Analyses (PHA). The engineer will own the Management of Change (MOC) process for assigned units, provide guidance on process optimization for safety, environmental compliance, and profitability, and maintain unit technical process standards. Additionally, the role includes providing engineering assistance and mentoring to colleagues, supporting capital project development, conducting economic analyses, and staying updated on industry innovations. Training on PHA, Incident Investigation, MOC, and Pre-start up Safety Reviews (PSSR) will be provided and facilitated. The position also involves participating in process safety audits, Layers Of Protection Analysis (LOPA) reviews, and assisting in developing solutions for process safety action items. Responsibilities extend to designing plant equipment and processes, conducting research for new and improved manufacturing processes, recommending and implementing operational improvements, reviewing vendor proposals for equipment, assisting with clean fuel projects, and designing plant additions and modifications. The engineer will also act as a liaison between the company and various agencies.

Requirements

A minimum of three to eight years of progressive work experience in a specific engineering discipline
A strong understanding of refinery processes and the elements of process safety is required
Ability to manage a project is essential
Working knowledge of commonly used engineering concepts and ability to apply this knowledge analytically
Ability to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes is essential
Ability to communicate effectively with others, strong verbal communication skills, advanced level of reading and writing
Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations
Advanced ability to work effectively with multiple groups throughout the refinery
Strong spreadsheet and word processing applications knowledge
Strong interpersonal, time-management and organizational skills
Ability to provide training to multiple groups on a variety of applicable assigned discipline topics
Knowledge of various process hazard analysis and root cause analysis methodologies is required for Process Safety Engineering discipline

Nice To Haves

Refinery or petrochemical industry experience preferred
Some or all of FCC, CCR, Alky, Sulfur unit, Delayed Coking, Lubes Processing and hydrotreating experience preferred
Working knowledge of and experience with engineering software is preferred

Responsibilities

Monitor and ensure performance of high complexity refinery process units

Coordinate, facilitate and document Process Hazzard Analysis (PHA)
Own Management of Change (MOC) process for assigned units and divisions
Provide process optimization guidance to ensure safety, guarantee environmental compliance, and maximize refinery profitability
Ensures the maintenance and integrity of business unit(s) data
Create and maintain unit technical process standards documents, guidelines, and procedures
Provide discipline specific engineering assistance, direction and mentoring to colleagues
Support and provide technical oversight for capital project development
Develops project scopes, estimate level budgets and funding requests for approval and ensures projects meet budget as well as company engineer practices and industry standards
Provide economic analysis or process operation and drives cost saving and yield improvement initiatives
Researches and stays abreast of assigned discipline subjects, innovations and leading edge developments
Provide training on PHA and Incident Investigation facilitation and general training on Management Of Change (MOC), incident investigations, PHAs and Pre-start up Safety Reviews (PSSR)
Participate in, facilitate and support Process Safety related audits and Layers Of Protection Analysis (LOPA) reviews and assist in Process Safety action items solution development
Design plant equipment and processes
Conduct research to develop new and improved product manufacturing processes
Recommend and implement improvements and/or modification in sequence of operations, equipment utilization, and related matters
Review proposals of outside vendors regarding the purchase of new or modernization of existing processing equipment
Assist with clean fuel projects
Design and build plant additions and modifications
Act as a liaison between the company and county and state and/or other agencies
