About The Position

TEL Silicon Valley’s San Jose Thin Films development team is seeking a process engineering intern for Summer 2027. The internship runs from May 17 through August 20, 2027, and is based at the San Jose office in California. Interns complete meaningful project work that contributes to business objectives and are expected to apply Lean principles and continuous improvement, with training and resources provided. The role offers hands-on experience in a research and development laboratory and supports interns’ professional development. The intern will work on process optimization and analysis, including design of experiments, tool signal data, metrology results, plasma diagnostics, reduced order models, and simulations of electromagnetic fields and plasmas. Laboratory work, including sample preparation and data collection, will be supervised.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Graduate-level study (M.S. or Ph.D.) is preferred; strong rising junior or senior candidates and bachelor’s-level students in the named fields will be considered.
  • Knowledge of design of experiments (DOE), statistical methods, computer-aided design (CAD), and computational plasma or fluids simulation tools.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and teamwork skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working on thin films and/or in a cleanroom environment.
  • Skills in coding and applying machine learning or AI techniques to accelerate learning and productivity.
  • Graduate-level (M.S. or Ph.D.) education.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct process design of experiments (DOEs) for process optimization.
  • Analyze and assimilate tool signal data and metrology results.
  • Work under supervision on plasma diagnostics and integrate diagnostic signals with tool and metrology data.
  • Construct reduced order models (ROMs) of chamber hardware and validate them using tool signal data.
  • Simulate electromagnetic fields and plasmas using commercial codes.
  • Work under supervision in the TEL laboratory, including sample preparation and data collection.
  • Apply Lean principles and continuous improvement thinking throughout project work.
