About The Position

General Matter is seeking a Process Engineer to support the development, optimization, and scaling of chemical processes for nuclear fuel cycle operations. The role works in a multidisciplinary environment to contribute to safe and efficient engineering solutions for advanced energy production. The ideal candidate has a foundational understanding of chemical engineering principles and is willing to learn and grow in the field. The Process Engineer will support process and unit-operation development for nuclear fuel production facilities, lead pilot-scale testing initiatives, and contribute to process modeling and data analysis. The role also involves executing engineering assignments, preparing technical and procedural documentation, communicating project progress and findings, and collaborating across manufacturing, operations, and safety teams.

Requirements

  • Evidence of exceptional ability, such as prior projects, a portfolio of work, or completed products.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees (MS, MBA, or PhD) may substitute for years of experience, depending on degree level.
  • At least 2 years of experience in nuclear safety, process safety, or similar high-hazard environments.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, and reaction kinetics.
  • Familiarity with engineering design processes and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency in problem-solving, data analysis, and effective technical communication.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying technical safety data to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, and licensing teams.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a fast-paced engineering environment or highly technical role requiring a resourceful, entrepreneurial approach to completing tasks within tight timeframes or budget constraints.
  • Relevant internship or co-op experience in industries such as nuclear, chemical, petroleum, or aerospace.
  • Exposure to process modeling tools.
  • Knowledge or experience with vacuum systems, cryogenics, compressible flow, or nuclear chemical processes.
  • Strong interest in contributing to innovative projects in nuclear energy or advanced chemical processing.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of new processes and the design of unit operations for nuclear fuel production facilities.
  • Lead pilot-scale testing initiatives and contribute to process modeling and data analysis.
  • Execute engineering assignments using knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and reaction kinetics.
  • Contribute to process modeling and prepare engineering documents, including design requirements, engineering specifications, and procedural documentation.
  • Prepare and present reports, summaries, test plans, and other documentation to communicate project progress and findings.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, and safety teams to support design and operational objectives.
  • Participate in technical reviews as a presenter or reviewer, offering insights and solutions to project challenges.

Benefits

  • For full-time hires, eligibility for long-term incentives in the form of stock options.
  • Access to medical, vision, and dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
