About The Position

Merrick & Company seeks a Chemical Engineering undergraduate or graduate student for a paid Summer 2027 Internship in our Oak Ridge, Tennessee office. Merrick’s Summer Internship Program provides students with meaningful, hands-on experience in chemical engineering. Designed as a shorter-term, exploratory experience, internships allow students to apply what they’re learning in school while gaining exposure to real projects, professional collaboration, and day-to-day life at an employee-owned company. The summer internship has a commitment of approximately mid-May through mid-August 2027.

Requirements

  • Must have graduation date after August 2027 to be eligible.
  • Must be pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering from an A.B.E.T. accredited program.
  • Must be currently enrolled and entering their junior year or higher of an undergraduate program or currently enrolled in graduate school.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers, designers, and other disciplines.
  • Familiarity with engineering calculations.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative in a professional engineering environment.
  • Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as Mathcad, Aspen Plus, or AFT.
  • Coursework or experience related to process engineering, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer, process controls, or thermodynamics.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs, PFDs, process equipment, and piping systems.
  • Previous internship, co-op, or project experience in Chemical Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Gain hands-on technical experience in process engineering and design, including process system development, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process calculations, equipment and material selection, fluid flow and pressure drop calculations, process modeling, process controls and exposure to industry codes, standards, and ASME NQA-1 quality requirements.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and interface with engineers, designers, and clients.
  • Learn to work within project schedules and budget commitments.
  • Develop the ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment.
  • Apply chemical engineering principles to real-world projects.
  • Gain experience working in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
