About The Position

The Process Engineer - Electrode & Assembly supports senior engineers in developing, improving, and troubleshooting battery-cell manufacturing processes from electrode through cell assembly at GM’s Battery Cell Development Center. The scope includes processes such as roll press, slitting, drying, notching, stacking, welding, assembly, packaging, sealing, and electrolyte filling. The engineer works under general supervision with limited guidance, independently executes assigned work, uses judgment on moderate-scope problems, and escalates complex products, equipment, quality, and safety decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical, manufacturing, materials, industrial engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in process engineering, manufacturing engineering, battery manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, or comparable precision manufacturing.
  • Practical experience supporting a manufacturing process, equipment area, engineering workstream, or improvement project.
  • Experience planning trials, analyzing process data, documenting results, and recommending practical improvements.
  • Working knowledge of root-cause analysis, process capability, SPC, DOE, or similar problem-solving methods.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, basic GD&T, process-flow diagrams, equipment manuals, and mechanical, electrical, or pneumatic schematics.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work hands-on in battery cell development environment
  • Demonstrated excellent level of analytical ability, interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members and customers to solve problems and resolve issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and difficult projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with one or more of the following: roll pressing, slitting, drying, notching, stacking, welding, cell assembly, packaging, sealing, leak testing, or electrolyte filling.
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing or development, automotive manufacturing, high-volume automation, or precision manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with laser, ultrasonic, or resistance welding; vacuum systems; automated dispensing; machine vision; robotics; PLCs; MES; or manufacturing data systems.
  • Experience with Minitab, Q-DAS, Python, Power BI, or similar data-analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, IATF 16949, PFMEA, control plans, or comparable quality systems; knowledge of battery materials, moisture control, dry-room practices, and safe electrolyte handling.
  • Demonstrated understanding of plant floor work and product design manufacturability
  • Multiple different Manufacturing engineering assignments with successful individual achievements or strong team-based achievements

Responsibilities

  • Support and lead development, troubleshooting, and improving processes from roll press through electrolyte fill.
  • Execute assigned trials, experiments, development builds, and document conditions, results, defects, and recommendations.
  • Support the development of process settings, operating windows, standard work, inspection methods, and requirements across assigned process steps.
  • Use process data, root-cause analysis, DOE, capability studies, and SPC to investigate defects, recommend corrective actions, and verify results.
  • Support PFMEA, control plans, reaction plans, equipment installation, commissioning, FAT, SAT, runoff, and process validation.
  • Coordinate assigned work with technicians, controls, quality, materials, product engineering, and suppliers; communicate results, risks, and open issues clearly.
  • Follow GM requirements for battery handling, dry-room operations, electrolyte, chemicals, equipment, and safe work practices.
