About The Position

The Process Engineer co-op student will assist the technical department in completing tasks that contribute to the efficient and cost-effective operation of the paper mill. This role involves hands-on work with paper machines, pulp mills, and laboratory testing, as well as collaboration with various departments.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student majoring in Chemical or Paper Engineering.
  • Completed freshman year but not surpassed senior status.
  • Attending University of Maine, Michigan Tech University, Western Michigan, or Michigan State.
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0/4.0.
  • Eligible to work in the US on a full-time basis.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must display maturity and a high level of professionalism.
  • Must take ownership of work and work area.
  • Ability to work with other lab personnel, operators, and supervisors.
  • Positive work attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and evaluate trials on the paper machines, pulp mill, secondary fiber, or other parts of the mill.
  • Conduct routine pulp and paper tests for trial evaluation or troubleshooting.
  • Monitor key process sensing equipment for accuracy and reliability, and implement repairs if problems are detected.
  • Conduct routine pulp quality tests weekly, including efficiencies, consistencies, and critical solids verifications.
  • Periodically monitor key consistency loops on stock chests and interface with the E/I Department to improve malfunctioning loops.
  • Order and maintain routine laboratory supplies and chemical solutions.
  • Assist in the start-up of paper machines from monthly shutdowns.
  • Conduct critical paper machine maintenance inspections.
  • Update lab MSDS for materials and chemicals used in the lab.
  • Perform other duties as needs and interest arise.
