About The Position

Regeneron's Preclinical Manufacturing & Process Development (PMPD) Purification team is seeking a Process Development Engineer I. This role focuses on the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of custom automated systems used in process development laboratories and pilot-scale environments. The engineer collaborates closely with internal stakeholders to identify operational bottlenecks and designs solutions that reduce manual interaction with equipment and improve data accessibility. The role includes both maintaining and enhancing existing automation systems and developing new systems from concept to deployment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3–5 years of experience, or master’s degree with 0–2 years of experience.
  • Degree in Engineering (e.g., Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical) or related field.
  • Strong background in downstream bioprocessing (e.g., filtration, chromatography, pilot-scale operations) or a strong background in automation, controls, or software development required.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on reliability and system performance
  • Ability to work across disciplines (software, electrical, mechanical, and process development)
  • Effective communication and collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial automation and control systems
  • Programming experience (e.g., Python or similar)
  • Experience developing control logic (e.g., sequential function charts, state-based control)
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC, Modbus TCP)
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI platforms (e.g., Ignition or similar)
  • Experience with data historians or data infrastructure (e.g., AVEVA PI or similar)

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy custom automation solutions for laboratory and pilot-scale process development equipment
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define requirements, identify bottlenecks, and develop solutions to improve workflow efficiency and data capture
  • Participate in full system lifecycle: concept development, design, procurement, assembly, controls development, testing, deployment and technology transfer
  • Develop control logic (e.g., PLC or equivalent), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and supporting software for automated systems
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with custom-built automation systems and supporting infrastructure
  • Maintain and improve existing automation systems to ensure reliability, performance, and usability
  • Identify and implement enhancements to reduce manual intervention, improve robustness, and increase scalability
  • Monitor system performance and proactively address issues impacting system uptime or data integrity
  • Support integration of equipment and automation systems with data platforms and PI historian
  • Develop and maintain data flows enabling monitoring, trending, reporting, and future advanced control capabilities
  • Assist in troubleshooting communication issues between devices, control systems, and data infrastructure
  • Communicate technical concepts and project progress to cross-functional stakeholders
  • Prepare and maintain documentation including system designs and technical reports
  • Present results and updates at team and department meetings
