About The Position

Perform chemical analyses or chemical experiments for quality or process control. Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or chemical experiments in laboratories for quality or process control or to develop knowledge.

Requirements

  • Four-year bachelor's degree in chemistry or related science field preferred; job experience considered in lieu of degree.
  • Professional, effective oral and written communication skills and analytical processes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of chemical composition, structure and properties including the use of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, and disposal methods.
  • Manage and prioritize work to complete multiple projects in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness, monitors own work to ensure quality and applies feedback to improve performance.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands and deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all job duties & responsibilities in a safe manner according to company safety policies and established best practices for working in a lab environment.
  • Perform laboratory tests in a wet chemistry / bench chemistry lab environment
  • Conduct: ICP analysis on samples from the mill; COD and FQA testing for 610; and product quality testing analysis for monthly beater report by grade and by production run.
  • Collect, analyze and report weekly and/or monthly sodium inventory, black liquor solids.
  • Ensure dryer lab is equipped for daily operating needs
  • Performing routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
  • Construct, maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment in the central lab (ex: centrifuges, titrators, pipetting machines and pH meters).
  • Record results, enter data and use computers to perform mathematical calculations and to prepare graphs for the mill.
  • Maintain testing procedures and equipment used in the central lab including calibration and preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Calibration of all brightness meters on the mill site.
  • Track chemical inventories.
  • Conduct training of mill and lab personnel on testing procedures and conduct cross-checking of testing to determine accuracy.
  • Update and revise test procedures and track new and improved procedures and equipment.
  • Perform wood species analysis including making and reading species slides.
  • Troubleshoot process issues as needed by operations.
  • Performing duties in all areas of the mill and in all types of weather conditions.
  • Assist as needed with air, effluent and water testing.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at the mill site. Performs other duties as assigned.
