About The Position

The Process Automation Engineer role is a hands-on position focused on designing, building, and supporting automated business workflows within the Investment Management division at State Street. This role operates within a Product, Platform, and Service model, utilizing tools such as AI, agentic automation, scheduled jobs, process models, and APIs to create practical, reliable automation for a regulated environment. The engineer will collaborate with various teams, including Process Automation Lead, business architecture, business units, and technology teams, to translate process designs into working software. The emphasis is on practical automation that functions effectively in production without causing disruptions, avoiding hype-driven adoption.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in software engineering, process automation, or solution delivery, with a track record of building and shipping production systems.
  • Hands-on experience in writing and reviewing code regularly.
  • Experience building workflow automation on a low-code or orchestration platform (e.g., Appian, Pega, Camunda) and integrating it with other systems.
  • Solid understanding of APIs, integration patterns, testing, and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Experience working in a regulated environment or a demonstrated understanding of controls and matrixed organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in investment management, asset management, or financial services.
  • Appian experience.
  • Experience with process modeling tools like ARIS or architecture repositories like Ardoq.
  • Experience using AI and agentic automation with a critical perspective on their practical applications.
  • Exposure to BPMN, capability modeling, or value streams.
  • Cloud experience in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • A relevant certification (e.g., Appian Certified Developer).

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and support automated business workflows, primarily using Appian or similar platforms.
  • Transform manual, high-friction workflows into software solutions by working with business architecture and business units.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of automation solutions, including requirements, deployment, and support, ensuring adherence to enterprise standards for security, resilience, controls, and maintainability.
  • Build integrations between the orchestration platform and surrounding systems, focusing on clean APIs and sensible contracts.
  • Write tests, fix defects, and provide ongoing support for built solutions, including instrumenting processes for operational visibility.
  • Pilot and evaluate new tools, including AI and agentic automation, sharing learnings with the team.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional pods across product, platform, and service lines, bringing automation engineering expertise.
  • Adhere to and help improve team delivery controls and engineering standards, proposing solutions for inefficiencies.
