About The Position

We are hiring a Process Automation Engineer to design and support automated business workflows. This is a hands-on maker's role where you will write code, wire up integrations, and transform manual processes into automation suitable for a regulated environment. The role is part of Process Engineering & Automation within State Street Investment Management. You will collaborate with the Process Automation Lead, business architecture, business units, and technology teams to convert process designs into functional software. The team is adopting a Product, Platform, and Service operating model, utilizing tools like AI, agentic automation, scheduled jobs, process models, and APIs. The focus is on selecting the right tool for the problem, building it effectively, and ensuring reliable production operation without unnecessary disruption. The goal is practical automation that runs smoothly in production.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in software engineering, process automation, or solution delivery.
  • Proven experience building and shipping production systems.
  • Hands-on builder who writes and reviews code regularly.
  • Experience building workflow automation on a low-code or orchestration platform (e.g., Appian, Pega, Camunda) and integrating it with other systems.
  • Solid understanding of APIs, integration patterns, testing, and SDLC.
  • Ability to demonstrate process improvements with specific outcomes.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment or understanding of controls and matrixed organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Investment management, asset management, or financial services background.
  • Understanding of financial concepts like NAV.
  • Experience with manual reconciliation processes at scale.
  • Appian experience.
  • Experience with process modeling tools like ARIS or architecture repositories like Ardoq.
  • Experience using AI and agentic automation with practical judgment on their applicability.
  • Exposure to BPMN, capability modeling, or value streams.
  • Cloud experience in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • A relevant certification (e.g., Appian Certified Developer).

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and support automated business workflows in Appian or similar platforms.
  • Transform manual, high-friction workflows into software by working with business architecture and business units.
  • Push back on process designs that are not viable for real systems.
  • Own delivery end-to-end, including requirements, deployment, and support, ensuring work meets enterprise standards for security, resilience, controls, and maintainability.
  • Build integrations between the orchestration platform and surrounding systems using clean APIs and sensible contracts.
  • Write tests, fix defects, and monitor solutions in production.
  • Instrument processes to provide visibility into operational bottlenecks.
  • Pilot and evaluate new tools, including AI and agentic automation, sharing learnings with the team.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional pods (product, platform, service lines) by embedding with different teams as needed.
  • Bring automation engineering expertise to pods, working with product owners, platform engineers, and service teams.
  • Adhere to and help improve team delivery controls and engineering standards.
  • Identify and propose solutions for process inefficiencies.
