About The Position

This position is for a Probationary Music Teacher specializing in Band at Transit Middle School. The role requires a teacher with New York State Certification in Music K-12 who can effectively implement music content and performance standards in a band setting. The teacher will be responsible for motivating and instructing students, developing their problem-solving skills, and contributing to the growth of an exemplary band program. The position involves demonstrating successful classroom experience, strong rehearsal techniques, aural acuity, conducting skills, and effective classroom management, including discipline in large groups. A high level of instrument proficiency on primary and secondary instruments is expected, along with the ability to incorporate differentiated instruction and create a flexible, student-centered classroom. Success in preparing students for evaluations like NYSSMA and ECMEA is important. The role also includes willingness to work with students outside regular school hours for extra help and performances, active participation in professional organizations, knowledge of music literature and curriculum, and effective communication skills. The teacher will collaborate with staff, administration, parents, and community groups, demonstrating a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and organizational skills. Infusing technology into instruction and reflecting on teaching for continued growth are also key aspects. The teacher will contribute to school community and extracurricular events such as the school musical, tours, and advising clubs.

Requirements

  • New York State Certification in Music K-12
  • Evidence of superior knowledge of content and performance standards and the ability to effectively implement them in the appropriate level band setting.
  • Ability to motivate and instruct students at a variety of ability levels.
  • Evidence of strong rehearsal techniques, aural acuity, and conducting skills.
  • Demonstrated effective classroom management skills, including the ability to motivate students of varying skill levels and effectively maintain discipline in very large groups.
  • Demonstrated a high level of instrument proficiency skills (both primary and secondary instruments).
  • Evidence of incorporating differentiated instruction in instructional planning to meet the needs of all students.
  • Evidence of a desire to create a classroom that is flexible and student centered.
  • Demonstrated success in the preparation of students for NYSSMA, ECMEA, or other comparable instrumental solo or group evaluations.
  • Willingness to work with students before and after regular school hours to provide extra help for their musical performances, including preparation for competitions and festivals.
  • Be active in professional organizations, e.g. NAfME, NYSSMA, ECMEA, and continued professional development.
  • Knowledge of music literature, curriculum, and technology application appropriate to various levels.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff members, colleagues, administration, parents, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated a strong work ethic and attention to detail and organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to infuse technology into the instructional program.
