About The Position

Washington County Community Corrections is seeking a highly collaborative and supportive individual to join their team as a Probation and Parole Officer (PPO). A key function of this role involves managing a caseload of individuals from diverse backgrounds. This department plays a crucial role in community safety by working to prevent re-offending among adult Justice Involved Individuals (JIIs). They achieve this by ensuring accountability to supervision conditions while supporting successful reintegration into the community. Requirements

  • Must be DPSST Certified for Probation and Parole at time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any concentration, AND Three (3) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field; OR Associate’s degree in any concentration, AND Four (4) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field; OR High School Diploma or equivalent, AND Five (5) years of experience in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field.
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related field may substitute for two (2) years of required work experience.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Must possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Oregon and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Must acquire and maintain CPR and first aid certification.
  • Must be a US citizen, or become a US citizen within 18 months of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a post-offer physical abilities assessment, psychological assessment, and the DPSST pre-employment medical exam prior to appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting a caseload of people from various backgrounds.
  • Holding Justice Involved Individuals (JIIs) accountable to the conditions of their supervision.
  • Supporting JIIs' efforts to live successfully in the community.
  • Investigating cases and objectively evaluating information.
  • Assessing personal needs of adult JIIs and determining treatment plans.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete casework records.
  • Learning and using self-defense tactics including the use of protective devices issued by the department.
  • Actively participating in annual training and demonstrations on proper field security, physical defense, and arrest tactics and practices.
  • Learning to handle, disarm, and control weapons in a safe and proper manner.
  • Meeting a variety of physical exertion requirements in the use of equipment and in the control and manipulation of resisting JIIs.
  • Communicating effectively and professionally both orally and in writing with individuals of varying backgrounds, including JIIs, court and law enforcement personnel, and the general public.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with individuals, including co-workers and supervisors.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with individuals and groups who come from diverse backgrounds and represent members of the public, coworkers, and/or vendors.
