About The Position

Jefferson County is seeking well-qualified and motivated Probation Officer for its Family Court Department. Probation Officers are responsible for supervising juvenile offenders who have been assigned court-ordered supervision. Employees in this job class conduct interviews with juvenile probationers and their guardians, perform home/school/site visits with probationers, prepare various forms of paperwork (e.g., court report, social history, assessment of risk), testify in court on behalf of probationers, and attend professional development events (e.g., conferences, seminars, workshops). Probation Officers have no supervisory responsibilities to subordinate personnel and work in a variety of different settings including the detention center, offices, courtrooms, schools, and clients’ residences.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by one of the following regional accrediting agencies: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), Higher Learning Commission (HLC), New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
  • Aged 21 or older.
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving force, violence, or immorality.
  • Willing to submit to a criminal background check.
  • Willing to submit to an Alabama Abuse and Neglect check.

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, social and behavioral sciences, or a related field from a college or university accredited by one of the following agencies: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), Higher Learning Commission (HLC), New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
  • Experience working with families and children.

Responsibilities

  • Performs day-to-day administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure the department is functioning in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Completes intake procedures for new juvenile cases by interviewing involved parties, conducting social interviews, and completing risk assessments to ensure that all relevant information is gathered about the juvenile and the case.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
  • Supervises juveniles by maintaining contact, gathering updated information relevant to cases, performing home/site visits, and communicating with various departments/agencies to ensure juveniles are compliant with court orders.
  • Serves court summons and petitions to juveniles to notify them of their court dates.
  • Answers questions from juveniles and custodians regarding probation terms and conditions and court procedures to ensure that juveniles and their custodians understand what is expected of them.
  • Monitors restitution payments/balances to process the appropriate non-payment paperwork or close the case after full payment.
  • Maintains current license, certification and/or registration by completing continuing education credit units (CEUs).
  • Collaborates with other professionals (e.g., mental health professionals, attorneys, case managers, judges, school officials) to discuss how to best handle cases.
  • Refers juveniles to agencies, services, and community resources in order to assist them with court orders and program compliance.
