About The Position

The State of Vermont is seeking a conscientious, self-motivated, and highly professional individual to join the Brattleboro Probation & Parole Office as a Probation & Parole Officer. Probation & Parole Officers play an important role in promoting public safety, supporting positive behavioral change, and holding individuals under supervision accountable to the conditions of their supervision. This position requires sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to make informed decisions in a fast-paced and often unpredictable environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational and time-management abilities, attention to detail and effective observation skills, strong computer and documentation skills, the ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team, sound judgment and the ability to think critically and respond appropriately under pressure, a strong understanding of professional ethics, boundaries, and confidentiality, and the ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships with clients, colleagues, law-enforcement agencies, and community partners. Successful candidates should have an understanding of victim awareness, risk and needs assessment, evidence-based intervention strategies, case planning, and effective supervision practices. The ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with local law-enforcement agencies, treatment providers, courts, and other community partners is essential. The position is based in an office setting and includes regular field work within the community. Officers may be required to conduct home visits, meet with individuals under supervision, ensure appropriate supervision of individuals under community supervision during hospitalization. Collaborate with community partners and respond to situations outside the traditional office environment. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening, weekend, and after-hours work may be required based on operational needs. Selected candidates must successfully complete six weeks of required training at the Vermont Correctional Academy. Additional ongoing training and professional development are expected throughout the officer's career. Requirements

• Bachelor's degree, or higher, in criminal justice, or a closely related field.
• OR High school diploma or equivalent or higher AND three (3) years or more experience in human services casework OR related fields, such as mental health/addiction counseling, residential treatment, juvenile justice, direct service legal work, emergency services, corrections, law enforcement, military service, or similar roles.
• Possession of a valid driver's license
• Must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
• Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
• Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.
