About The Position

This position assists in the performance of intake procedures, including interpreting and completing intake data forms. The role involves researching and gathering case information pertaining to probationers as required by the department. The Probation and Parole Aide will also obtain police reports, explain probation conditions to probationers, schedule appointments, explain restitution procedures, represent the Adult Probation and Parole Unit in court, prepare written reports, and perform other related duties as required. This role supports court coverage responsibilities, including preparing daily calendars, reviewing reports, presenting information to the court, and recording dispositions. It also involves interviewing offenders, entering and retrieving computer data, and interacting with community agency representatives.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn and apply the principles, practices and techniques of probation and parole services.
  • Ability to interpret court orders, judgements and dispositions and to transcribe such information accurately.
  • Ability to assist probation and parole officers in the referral of probationers to outside resources.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise written reports and forms.
  • Ability to appear in court when so requested.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, offenders, superiors and the public.
  • Graduation from a senior high school.
  • Considerable employment in a position with responsibility for the performance of complex clerical and routine administrative tasks in a supportive role directly related to the probation and parole unit’s function.
  • Any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the performance of intake procedures involving the interpretation and completion of intake data forms.
  • Research and gather case information that pertains to probationers as required by the department.
  • Obtain police reports from appropriate law enforcement departments and the Attorney General’s office.
  • Explain conditions of probation to probationers and ensure they have a thorough understanding of special conditions.
  • Schedule appointments between probationers and the probation and parole counselor.
  • Explain procedures for restitution to probationers when restitution has been ordered by the court.
  • Represent the Adult Probation and Parole Unit, as directed, in court providing case testimony.
  • Prepare written reports and related forms.
  • Assist in court coverage responsibilities including calendar coverage, reviewing and preparing reports, presenting information to the court, and recording dispositions.
  • Interview offenders, complete and interpret conditions of probation and other intake forms.
  • Research and gather computer records, police reports, criminal history and other case information.
  • Enter, retrieve and compile computer data.
  • Interact with representatives of community agencies.
