The purpose of this role is to ensure the well-being of patients and provide a positive, supportive, and structured environment, under the direction of a charge nurse or supervisor. Patient safety is paramount and is addressed through required rounds completed timely, ensuring patient rooms are clean and uncluttered. Observations may be assigned every 15 minutes, within reach of the patient, and/or 1:1 patient care may be required. The role involves obtaining patient vital signs, height, and weight as assigned, and ensuring documentation of this information. You will identify yourself to patients and visitors promptly and respond to patient requests quickly. Engaging with patients in activities and interactions designed to encourage the achievement of treatment goals is a key responsibility. Responding to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and attempting to understand the source of distress is crucial. The role requires applying de-escalation techniques to help manage patient’s emotions, behavior, and participation in treatment, and assisting with seclusion and restraint when necessary. As part of the multidisciplinary team, you will provide safety and increase coping skills of patients, assisting in developing strategies for helping patients to be as independent as possible. Collaboration with other staff in working with the facility's population to treat, rehabilitate, and return patients to the community is expected. Monitoring behavioral improvements and reinforcing these behaviors, reporting changes and responses to treatment by communicating with the team, with significant changes reported to the nurse immediately, are essential. You will reinforce skills patients learn from nurses, physicians, and therapists that promote improved physical and mental wellness. Leading or co-leading individual or group sessions as part of specific recreational or therapeutic procedures may be required. You may participate in rehabilitation and treatment programs as well as teach strategies to promote patient wellness and independence. Overseeing or assisting patients with activities of daily living, including toileting, bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, meals, snacks, hydration, and changing bed linens, may be part of the duties. Delivering care based on the priority of needs and available resources to the specific service population of the facility is required. Assisting with admissions and discharges may be necessary. Providing guidance and direction to other staff members, including training of new staff, may be part of the role. Providing transportation for patients or coordinating transportation with the appropriate staff member may also be required. Quality of work is exhibited through accuracy, neatness, and timeliness of work completed. Adherence to work schedule and overall attendance is expected. Demonstrating a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude towards customers always is required. When patient needs are not met, acknowledging and working to resolve complaints is important. Recognizing that patient safety is a top priority is essential.
