About The Position

Cardinal Health's Health System Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective coordination of pharmacy operations serving acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices, and retail customers. This division provides customized pharmacy program solutions to reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems, and other integrated healthcare providers. They may also consult with and advise healthcare teams on prescribed medications, supplies, and related processes. The Pharmacist II role within a hospital system pharmacy outsourced to Cardinal Health involves adjusting and dispensing medications, ensuring compliant and efficient pharmacy operations, verifying physician orders, adjusting medications per protocols, and providing patient education. This role also includes supervising Pharmacy Technicians and managing compliance tasks related to accreditation, narcotics control, and inventory management. Cardinal Health manages the pharmacy at PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Wausau and is seeking a PRN Pharmacist for as-needed shifts during facility hours and on-call duties. The facility operates Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm, with on-call services available after-hours and on weekends.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in pharmacy or PharmD.
  • Licensed Pharmacist in good standing in the state of Wisconsin, or able to obtain licensure.
  • Computer savvy to learn and perform successful operation of multiple pharmacy information systems.
  • Ability to see, hear, write, and speak clearly in order to communicate with customers and health care professionals.
  • Ability to work on call or be in an on-call rotation.
  • May require vendor credentialing.

Nice To Haves

  • In-patient/hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • IV experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Applies expert knowledge of drugs and related protocols to verify physician orders for medications using the pharmacy information system.
  • Checks drug and dose in relation to the stated patient issue and addresses automated alerts from the system regarding drug type, dose, and other metrics.
  • Supervises Pharmacy Technicians to ensure compliant and efficient pharmacy operations.
  • Checks all work of Pharmacy Technicians in line with State Boards of Pharmacy regulations and provides guidance on complex prescriptions, pharmacy automation systems, orders, and other issues.
  • Adjusts dosages based on established protocols for each drug, ensuring appropriateness for the patient’s condition and in light of other medications, and completes clinical tasks related to antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Educates patients on the proper use and expected effects of medications, especially for those on multiple medications, starting new regimens, or being discharged.
  • Manages narcotics and inventory control and compliance, including regular documentation and completion of checklists.
  • Audits outdated medication in states where Pharmacy Technicians are not permitted to do so.
  • Contacts Nurses and Physicians as necessary to verify orders and obtain additional information.
  • Assists the Pharmacy Director in maintaining pharmacy accreditation and implementing operational changes, such as new systems or adjustments to standard procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
