About The Position

Thrive Education Partners is seeking an experienced Algebra 2 tutor for a high school student in Nolensville, Tennessee. Sessions are one hour, once a week, on Wednesdays, in the family's home. Because this student earns A's across every other course, the work looks different from a typical tutoring assignment. The capability is well established, so the role is less about remediation or study skills than about precision: following the specific approach the classroom teacher is using, in the same notation and the same sequence of steps, so that the weekly session and the classroom reinforce one another rather than pulling in different directions. Algebra 2 admits many valid methods, and a tutor who introduces an unfamiliar one, however elegant, has added a second thing to learn on top of the thing the student is already stuck on. We are looking for someone who begins each session by reading the student's class notes and recent assignments, teaches from the method they find there, and offers an alternate approach only once the classroom method is secure. The strongest candidate will be fluent enough in the subject to teach it several ways and disciplined enough to teach it the way the class does.

Requirements

  • Has taught or tutored Algebra 2 and can teach the full scope of the course with confidence.
  • Holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics, a related quantitative field, or education with a math concentration.
  • Reads a student's class materials first and teaches to that method, even when they would personally solve the problem differently.
  • Recognizes and adapts to different textbook conventions, notations, and step sequences.
  • Verifies work during the session and catches their own errors before the student does.
  • Has experience working one-on-one with capable high school students, not only with students who are behind.
  • Distinguishes a conceptual gap from a procedural slip and handles the two differently.
  • Communicates with families accurately and without overstating a problem.
  • Values consistency and arrives reliably at the same time each week.
  • Is authorized to work in the United States and can commute dependably to Nolensville.

Nice To Haves

  • State teaching certification in secondary mathematics.
  • Current or recent high school math classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching honors or accelerated Algebra 2.
  • Background supporting high-achieving students who are struggling in a single subject.
  • Familiarity with the math sequence at Williamson County high schools.
  • ACT or SAT math preparation experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one-hour Algebra 2 sessions each Wednesday in the student's home.
  • Begin each session by reviewing class notes, worked examples, and returned assignments to identify the method being taught.
  • Teach using the classroom's method and notation, introducing alternate approaches only as reinforcement once the primary method holds.
  • Check completed work for accuracy before the session ends, correcting errors together rather than leaving them to be discovered later.
  • Work through the core content of the course: functions and transformations, quadratics, polynomials, rational and radical expressions, exponentials and logarithms, and systems.
  • Identify the particular step or concept that is breaking down, rather than treating the subject as weak overall.
  • Teach the student to verify their own answers and recognize when a result is unreasonable.
  • Prepare the student for tests and quizzes, including reviewing graded assessments for patterns worth addressing.
  • Keep the family informed about what was covered and what is genuinely happening with the material.
  • Coordinate with Thrive's Educational Management team on approach, progress, and any recommended change to session frequency.
