About The Position

We are currently seeking a Privacy Officer to join our Corporate Legal team in a permanent position. In this senior-level role, you will lead the development, implement and continuous improvement of Nova Scotia Power's enterprise privacy program. You will provide strategic legal advice, oversee compliance and risk-management activities, lead complex privacy assessments and investigations, and guide incident and breach-response efforts to safeguard personal information. Working closely with leaders and cross-functional teams, you will help embed practical privacy solutions across the organization while supporting business objectives.

Requirements

  • A law degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience in privacy law
  • Membership in good standing with a provincial law society and eligibility for admission to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society.
  • Advanced knowledge of privacy legislation, regulatory requirements, information governance and emerging privacy issues.
  • Strong judgement, analytical ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide strategic advice on complex and sensitive legal matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives without relying solely on formal authority.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, advocacy and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while building effective professional relationships.
  • Commitment to integrity, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally.

  • Experience working for a regulated entity is an asset
  • CIPP or equivalent privacy certification is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Privacy Program: Develop, implement and continuously improve the enterprise privacy program.
  • Establish privacy policies, standards, procedures, governance processes and compliance controls.
  • Set priorities, coordinate complex assignments and provide guidance and mentorship on privacy matters.
  • Provide Strategic Legal Risk Advice: Advise executives, leaders and internal clients on privacy, data protection and information governance.
  • Interpret legislation, regulations, regulatory guidance and industry standards.
  • Identify legal, operational, cybersecurity and reputational risks, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Advise on privacy considerations related to technology, data sharing, vendor contracts and digital services.
  • Manage Assessments, Investigations and Regulatory Matters: Lead complex Privacy Impact Assessments and recommend mitigation measures.
  • Assess and investigate privacy incidents and breaches.
  • Advise on containment, remediation, notification and regulatory reporting.
  • Respond to privacy complaints, regulator inquiries, audits and information requests.
  • Support investigations, regulatory matters and potential litigation involving personal information.
  • Collaborate and Promote Privacy Awareness: Partner with Cybersecurity, Compliance, Procurement, Human Resources and business leaders.
  • Build relationships with government bodies, external counsel and industry organizations.
  • Lead privacy training, communications, and awareness initiatives.
  • Communicate complex legal and technical matters clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Lead with Operational Excellence: Influence outcomes through expertise and awareness initiatives.
  • Manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality results with limited supervision.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
