Printed Circuit Board Layout Designer

EricssonOttawa, ON
CA$85,000 - CA$111,300Onsite

About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented early‑career Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Layout Designer to join our Digital Hardware Design team and contribute to the development of next‑generation wireless base‑station radios. The role focuses on PCB layout for digital and RF hardware designs within radio development. This position is based at the Ericsson R&D Center in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In this role, the designer will create PCB layouts of varying complexity using Cadence Allegro, while learning and applying industry best practices in layout execution, documentation, manufacturability, and cross‑site collaboration. This is a growth‑oriented role intended for candidates who want to build their professional career in layout design and who demonstrate strong fundamentals, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn and adapt to evolving design flows.

Requirements

  • Basic to intermediate experience in PCB layout using Cadence Allegro PCB Designer.
  • Understanding of multi‑layer PCB layout concepts, including routing, planes, vias, and stack‑ups.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mixed‑signal PCB layout concepts.
  • Fundamental understanding of high‑speed digital layout principles (e.g., impedance control, length matching, DDR‑class interfaces).
  • Fundamental understanding of RF circuit layout concepts.
  • Ability to follow structured design processes and documentation rules with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset when working with cross‑functional and cross‑site teams.
  • Good problem‑solving ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize work within defined project schedules and raise issues proactively.
  • Bachelor’s or Masters’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent (early‑career candidates are encouraged to apply).
  • Academic, co‑op, internship, or early professional experience in PCB layout design is required; industrial experience is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn, accept feedback, and continuously improve technical and process‑related skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with power and protection circuits is an advantage.
  • Exposure to constraint‑driven design and the Cadence Constraint Manager is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the hardware design team throughout product development phases to prepare PCB layouts and component placement based on schematics, design rules, and documented processes.
  • Implement PCB layouts using Cadence Allegro for multi‑layer digital and RF‑mixed designs under guidance from senior designers.
  • Ensure layout designs meet electrical, mechanical, manufacturability, and documentation requirements.
  • Generate PCB output files for Design for Manufacturing (DFM) review and for submission to PCB vendors for fabrication.
  • Collaborate with Ericsson internal DFM teams to ensure compliance with Ericsson Design for Assembly (DFA) and DFM practices.
  • Maintain accurate, traceable, and synchronized layout data, including design files, releases, and supporting documentation, in accordance with defined documentation structures and revision rules.
  • Participate in design reviews and address review feedback in a timely and structured manner.
  • Proactively communicate design risks, uncertainties, or challenges that may impact schedule, quality, or cost to the Board Prime or Board Team Lead.
  • Support cost‑, schedule‑, and quality‑driven design activities by considering manufacturability, panelization, materials, and supplier constraints during layout execution.
  • Continuously develop PCB layout skills through research, training, and hands‑on learning, including exposure to new tools, technologies, and evolving design methodologies.
  • Work closely and interact with global Ericsson teams across Europe and Asia, following standardized ways of working.
