About The Position

Questrade Financial Group (QFG) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join their diverse, inclusive, and hybrid workplace. This role is for an individual who can define and build the full stack, lead solution design, drive architectural decisions, and write production code. The position involves hands-on work alongside other senior and principal engineers, with a strong emphasis on ownership from design to production. The role requires daily use of AI tools like Cursor or Claude to accelerate work and requires the ability to translate business problems into executable technical strategies. The engineer will work in-person in the North York office three days a week, collaborating with engineers and product leads to translate requirements into technical strategies, identify trade-offs, and ensure solutions align with product direction. Collaboration with peers on architecture, problem-solving, and maintaining high standards is expected. The role also includes leading design and architectural reviews, producing technical documentation, and ensuring quality from design to production.

Requirements

  • Active daily use of AI development tools like Cursor or Claude.
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of leading technical initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience leading solution design for complex systems, including facilitating architecture sessions, producing design documentation, and driving teams from ambiguity to executable plans.
  • Strong hands-on command of TypeScript.
  • Experience with React and React Native (or a documented history of quickly learning new frameworks).
  • Deep practical knowledge of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) in production.
  • Strong object-oriented (OOP) fundamentals.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineers and product leads.
  • Comfortable with in-person collaboration in North York three days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Angular or C# / .NET Core.
  • Experience with real-time technologies like WebSockets, gRPC, or Firebase.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Complex query experience in analytical databases like BigQuery or Bigtable.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or a portfolio demonstrating architectural thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Use AI tools like Cursor or Claude daily to accelerate coding, design thinking, reviews, and documentation.
  • Lead end-to-end solution design for complex initiatives, including facilitating technical discovery, defining system boundaries, and producing architecture artifacts.
  • Make technical decisions across back-end, web, and mobile, and implement them in TypeScript (React for web, React Native for mobile).
  • Work in-person with engineers and product leads to translate requirements into technical strategies, surface trade-offs, and align solutions with product direction.
  • Collaborate with other senior and principal engineers to align on architecture, share ownership of complex problems, and maintain high standards.
  • Lead design and architectural reviews.
  • Produce technical documentation.
  • Own solutions from first design to production.
