About The Position

The Principal, Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including cloud-native architectures and AI/ML frameworks, to support Walmart’s evolving technology roadmap. This role drives full lifecycle software development across multiple teams, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance. The position requires strategic technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex business needs into effective solutions. The Principal Engineer champions innovation, continuous improvement, and adherence to best practices, fostering engineering excellence that advances Walmart’s technology vision and operational goals. The Reliability Engineering Platform team develops and maintains enterprise-scale systems that enhance operational reliability and efficiency across Walmart’s technology infrastructure. Focusing on distributed systems, observability, and resiliency automation, the team delivers scalable solutions that reduce systemic risk and provide real-time insights across microservices and multi-region Kubernetes clusters. Team members collaborate to design, implement, and support robust platforms using advanced engineering practices and continuous development. Their work ensures high availability and performance of critical systems, supporting Walmart’s commitment to operational excellence and innovation in technology delivery.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable and reusable infrastructure solutions.
• Proficiency in cloud-native architecture and distributed system design ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
• Strong technical expertise in AI/ML integration, software development lifecycle, and continuous integration/deployment practices.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical execution, including coding, testing, monitoring, and incident response.
• Skilled in applying model-driven design and leveraging modern development tools to enhance productivity.
• Proven leadership in mentoring engineers and influencing architectural decisions across teams.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional stakeholders.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
• 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
• Experience in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
• Knowledge of accessibility best practices and joining us as we continue to create accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for supporting an inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable, cloud-native infrastructure and reusable tooling aligned with strategic roadmaps.
• Drive full software development lifecycle activities including design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance across multiple teams.
• Architect and implement distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, promoting best practices and architectural consistency.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
• Maintain architectural decision records to ensure transparency and alignment.
• Foster continuous improvement through innovation, knowledge sharing, and adoption of emerging technologies.
