About The Position

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable SAP platform capabilities and oversee the full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance. You will provide strategic technical leadership, mentor engineering teams, and work with stakeholders to translate complex business needs into effective technical solutions. The role supports Walmart’s long-term platform evolution and promotes continuous improvement and operational excellence. The Walmart Payroll Modernization Team is transforming how payroll technology is built, operated, and scaled for a large workforce. The team owns the strategy, design, implementation, and continuing evolution of next-generation payroll platforms, supporting accurate and timely pay while meeting regulatory and business requirements. It works across product, engineering, and payroll operations to modernize systems, build capabilities, simplify legacy processes, enable business transformations, and establish strong engineering and operational practices. This position contributes to a large payroll modernization program serving more than 1.6 million associates monthly. It defines enterprise payroll architecture and leads development of core payroll capabilities for complex US payroll operations. The annual salary range is $95,000–$165,000. Additional compensation may include annual or quarterly performance bonuses, regional pay zone adjustments based on location, and stock.

Requirements

Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 5 years of experience in software engineering or a related area.
Option 2: 7 years of experience in software engineering or a related area.
Deep technical expertise in ABAP, ABAP HR, ABAP OO, CDS Views, AMDP, OData Services, Enhancements, Forms, Interfaces, Workflow, and SAP Integration technologies.
Proven experience designing and building scalable, high-performance applications and integrations across SAP and non-SAP platforms.
Experience integrating SAP solutions with enterprise platforms such as Workday, ServiceNow, SAP Finance (FI), SuccessFactors, cloud services, and custom applications.
Strong understanding of software design principles, system architecture patterns, security, performance optimization, and operational excellence.

Experience with EPI-USE Variance Monitor and other SOLMAN/ALM tools.
