This role focuses on leading frontend engineering practices, tooling, and skillsets within the organization. The Principal Software Engineer will be responsible for the development of accessible, performant, and user-centered web applications for government customers. This position requires serving as a technical authority and thought leader for frontend architecture and engineering excellence, designing and implementing modern frontend architectures, development pipelines, and deployment infrastructure. The role involves delivering new features and improvements to customer-facing applications with a strong emphasis on user experience and accessibility compliance (Section 508, WCAG). Collaboration with product managers is key for ideation and balancing UI/UX with implementation effort. The engineer will build and maintain component libraries, design systems, and shared frontend infrastructure to enhance team velocity and consistency. Identifying opportunities to modernize the frontend stack and taking ownership of technical initiatives to improve developer experience and application quality are also core responsibilities. Establishing and championing frontend best practices, including mobile-first development, testing strategies, performance optimization, accessibility standards, and code quality patterns, is expected. Mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels on frontend technologies and establishing career development pathways for frontend specialization are crucial. The role requires influencing technical decisions across teams and serving as a strategic advisor on frontend initiatives. While frontend is the primary focus, working across the full stack when needed to solve problems end-to-end is also part of the role, making backend experience valuable.
