Principal Software Engineer (Mission Systems) (Onsite)

RTXPlano, TX
$107,500 - $204,500Onsite

About The Position

The Sensors: Space and Airborne Radar Center provides end-to-end design, development, deployment, integration, and sustainment of multi-domain C2 and radar systems. The center specializes in developing Tactical Modes, Built-In Test (BIT), and Radar Interface software for Tactical Radar Systems, as well as pioneering radar software and signal processing technologies. The center also develops advanced sensor technologies and mission support capabilities for warfighters, including electro-optical, infrared, and electronic solutions across various platforms. Our software engineers are responsible for software architecture, design, and implementation for radar systems, signal processing, tracking, and resource management throughout the product lifecycle. Raytheon has an opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer to join our Mission Systems Engineering Team in the DFW area. We’re seeking a highly capable Software Engineer with strong systems thinking, deep software architecture experience, and domain knowledge in advanced defense or aerospace systems. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, collaborates across disciplines, and can drive software design at the system-of-systems level.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience with software architecture for large scale and complex system‑of‑systems, subsystem interface design, and software integration and test.
  • Experience with engineering and modeling tools (Cameo or Enterprise Architect, MS Visio) and familiarity with MOSA standards (OMS, AMS‑GRA, A-GRA).
  • Experience developing, testing, and integrating real-time software applications using C++ or related software languages and Linux, VxWorks, or other real-time operating systems.
  • Product-domain experience in at least one of the following areas: RF or EO/IR Sensors Electronic Warfare Effectors Communications Multi-domain Mission Systems
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated collaboration with other engineering teams - Systems, Firmware, and Hardware.
  • Ability to develop and present complex technical material at design reviews such as PDR and CDR.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, dynamically changing environments.
  • Proactive problem-solving and strong ownership mindset.
  • Experience working in system integration lab (SIL) environments with physical hardware including test benches and simulators.
  • Experience with Agile Scrum development practices.
  • Hands-on experience with Git for version control and GitLab or Artifactory for repository management.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps pipelines including static analysis, automated build and test, CI/CD, and test-driven development.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued Secret security clearance with special program access.

Responsibilities

  • Function as a senior technical contributor who can delegate and review work from lower level engineers and influence policies, practices, and procedures to ensure steady progress.
  • Provide senior level systems thinking and architecture support (systems CONOPS, specification trees, and multi CSCI decomposition) to resolve complex issues on the path to PDR.
  • Operate effectively with senior architects and technical fellows, integrating across disciplines and navigating a fast moving environment with minimal oversight.
  • Leverage subject matter expertise in system of systems architecture, inter CSCI interfaces, software requirements, and SW/HW integration to drive technical clarity across a broad array of potential sensor and effector integrations.
  • Utilize advanced modeling tools (Cameo/EA), MOSA standards, and multi discipline agile leadership experience to communicate technical decisions across engineering teams, customers, and vendors, and to support major design reviews.
  • Architect, implement, test, and debug embedded real‑time software in heterogeneous hardware, firmware, and software environments.
  • Participate in major design reviews, including PDR and CDR.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers.
