Principal Software Engineer

Questrade Financial GroupToronto, ON
CA$135,000 - CA$165,000Hybrid

About The Position

Questrade Financial Group (QFG) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join their team. This role involves owning the full stack, defining how it's built, and then building it. The engineer will lead solution design, drive architectural decisions, and write code. It's a hands-on position where the individual will work alongside other senior and principal engineers as peers. The role requires designing, coding, and owning solutions in production. The position is hybrid, requiring three days a week on-site at the North York office, collaborating directly with engineers and product leads. The team utilizes AI tools like Cursor or Claude daily to enhance productivity and quality. This role is for proactive engineers who can translate business problems into architectures, own solutions end-to-end, and collaborate effectively to ensure successful implementation.

Requirements

  • Active daily use of AI development tools like Cursor or Claude is a hard requirement.
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of leading technical initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience leading solution design for complex systems, including facilitating architecture sessions, producing design documentation, and driving teams from ambiguity to executable plans.
  • Strong hands-on command of TypeScript, with React and React Native (or a documented history of picking up frameworks quickly).
  • Deep practical knowledge of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) in production, backed by strong object-oriented (OOP) fundamentals.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineers and product leads.
  • Comfortable with in-person collaboration in North York three days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Angular or C# / .NET Core.
  • Experience with real-time technologies like WebSockets, gRPC, or Firebase.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Complex query experience in analytical databases like BigQuery or Bigtable.
  • Contributions to open-source or a portfolio demonstrating architectural thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Use AI tools like Cursor or Claude daily to accelerate coding, design thinking, reviews, and documentation, always looking for ways to go faster without cutting corners.
  • Lead end-to-end solution design for complex initiatives, including facilitating technical discovery, defining system boundaries, and producing architecture artifacts.
  • Make and implement technical decisions across back-end, web, and mobile using TypeScript, React for web, and React Native for mobile.
  • Work in-person with engineers and product leads to translate requirements into technical strategies, identify trade-offs, and align solutions with product direction.
  • Collaborate with other senior and principal engineers to align on architecture, share ownership of complex problems, and maintain high standards.
  • Lead design and architectural reviews, produce technical documentation, and ensure high standards from design to production.

Benefits

  • Health & wellbeing resources and programs
  • Paid vacation, personal, and sick days
  • Competitive compensation and benefits packages
  • Comprehensive benefits plan
  • Competitive incentive (bonus) program
