Principal, Software Engineer
About The Position
The Principal, Software Engineer leads the technical vision and architecture for the next generation of AI-powered seller support experiences at Walmart Marketplace. You will drive the design of scalable, distributed systems and agentic AI workflows that empower support associates and sellers, reducing resolution time while improving customer satisfaction. You will partner across Engineering, Product, Data Science, and Operations to define long-term architecture, mentor senior engineers, and deliver highly available platforms that power intelligent automation across case management, guided workflows, and seller support. The Global Seller Support team delivers scalable platform capabilities and innovative technical solutions to empower sellers worldwide. This team develops AI-powered platforms and intelligent automation that enhance Walmart Marketplace support experiences. Engineers address complex, large-scale challenges using cloud-native technologies, Generative AI, and modern software engineering practices. The team focuses on creating reliable, high-impact products that support one of the world’s largest eCommerce ecosystems, driving continuous improvement and technical excellence to meet evolving business and customer needs.
Requirements
- 13+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise in Java, Python, AI solutions, big data platforms, Azure Cosmos DB, and large-scale rack system development.
- Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable, cloud-native architectures and reusable tooling.
- Proven ability to drive full software development lifecycle, including coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, and incident response.
- Expertise in designing distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
- Strong technical judgment with a focus on architectural decision-making and long-term system evolution.
- Proficiency in AI agents, model-driven design, and cloud computing architecture.
- Demonstrated leadership in mentoring engineers and fostering engineering excellence.
- Effective collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional teams.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in engineering processes.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
Nice To Haves
- E-commerce domain experience strong preferred.
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
- Creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities
- Define the technical strategy and architecture for large-scale Marketplace Support platforms.
- Lead the design and implementation of AI/LLM-powered agentic workflows and intelligent automation.
- Build resilient, scalable, and observable distributed systems handling millions of seller interactions.
- Drive engineering excellence through architecture reviews, design standards, and technical mentorship.
- Partner with Product, Data Science, and Operations to translate business problems into scalable platform capabilities.
- Influence engineering roadmaps across multiple organizations and lead cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Champion platform reliability, performance, security, and operational excellence.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
- Foster continuous improvement through innovation, knowledge sharing, and adoption of emerging technologies.
