•$172,600 - $259,000

About The Position

Wizards of the Coast’s Digital Innovations Team (DigIT) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to guide product ideas through the full lifecycle using agentic AI, from problem definition with business partners through development, production deployment, and data-informed improvement. The role sets technical direction for an initiative and its product area, and may also direct product decisions with or without Product Manager support. The engineer is accountable for delivery, the team’s ability to adapt, and resulting business outcomes. The position is hands-on and focused on shipping production products using agentic AI as the default development approach. The engineer will build production-quality agent systems, analyses, prompts, and supporting services, while applying and improving shared harness-engineering practices and guardrails. Production experience should inform judgment about evaluations, safeguards, cost, latency, determinism, failure modes, and responsible engineering at scale. The role emphasizes short, data-informed product feedback loops and high engineering standards across architecture, code review, testing, observability, evaluations, reliability, and incident response. It also provides technical and people leadership, supports hiring and interviews, and mentors senior and staff engineers. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.

Requirements

  • Direct experience developing, deploying, and improving agentic AI systems in real-world production settings beyond demos or proofs of concept.
  • Ability to explain authored code, test design, prompt and tool-use changes, cost and latency considerations, managed failure types, and metrics used to guide releases; interviews include a hands-on agentic AI task.
  • Over 10 years of full-stack software engineering experience.
  • At least 3 years in a Tech Lead, Staff, or Principal role responsible for guiding the technical direction of a team or program.
  • Product-engineering approach, including turning ideas into operational, monitored live software and making product tradeoffs and metric-informed decisions.
  • Proficiency in modern JavaScript or TypeScript and at least one of Go, Python, or C#; ability to write production code.
  • Strong systems and infrastructure foundation, including AWS at scale, containerization, GitLab or GitHub CI/CD, PostgreSQL and data modeling, REST, gRPC, or GraphQL API development, and test automation.
  • A well-developed point of view on observability and reliability.
  • Architectural judgment, including defending build decisions, responding to evidence, and writing build documentation.
  • Business and product literacy, with the ability to discuss business impact and tradeoffs while maintaining technical rigor.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to improve engineering peers, raise standards without becoming a bottleneck, and handle disagreement constructively.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a comparable field, or equivalent work experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading or contributing to platform or horizontal services such as search, notifications, identity, eventing, workflow, or data platforms used by multiple product teams.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Akamai, Terraform, or equivalent infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Experience operating in a tri-lead (TL / EM / PM) or similar matrixed engineering model.
  • Foundational knowledge of Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, or tabletop gaming.

Responsibilities

  • Guide product concepts from problem definition with product and business collaborators through prototyping, launch, and iteration based on actual usage data.
  • Build and deliver production-quality agent systems, analyses, prompts, and supporting services hands-on using agentic AI.
  • Define product ideas as testable hypotheses, establish tracking and success criteria before coding, and use data to guide prioritization and iteration.
  • Apply, stress-test, and improve the department’s shared agentic AI harness patterns, including LLMs, agents, Skills, MCP, evaluation frameworks, and guardrails.
  • Set technical direction for an initiative and its product area, and help direct product decisions with or without Product Manager support.
  • Raise engineering standards in architecture, code review, test strategy, observability, evaluations, reliability, and incident quality.
  • Influence people and product decisions, and help the Engineering Manager and Product Manager be more effective.
  • Lead technical interviews, calibrate AI-capability assessment in hiring, and mentor senior and staff engineers.
  • Communicate business impact and technical tradeoffs with creative, retail, finance, and engineering collaborators.
