Principal Software Engineer - Architect (Onsite)

RTX•McKinney, TX
•$107,500 - $204,500•Onsite

About The Position

Raytheon is seeking a Software Architect to design and develop software systems for real-time embedded applications. The role focuses on architecting a dual-layer processing pipeline on a Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC to support high-throughput, ultra-low-latency, deterministic video processing. The architect will work closely with firmware, systems, and other engineering teams to partition workloads between FPGA hardware and software, integrate and validate real-time algorithms, and support hardware/software integration on embedded platforms. The position also provides systems-level architectural support, including developing CONOPS, specification tree structures, and multi-CSCI decomposition. The architect applies system-of-systems architecture expertise to clarify inter-CSCI and LRU interfaces, requirement flows, and hardware/software integration, while supporting integration and verification. The position is onsite in McKinney, Texas, and requires an active, existing DoD Secret clearance after the first day. U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM preferred), typically, and a minimum of 8 years of prior engineering experience.
  • Experience with Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC software development, real-time embedded systems, and EO/IR algorithm integration.
  • Experience guiding technical development, mentoring engineers, and leading software teams through complex lifecycle activities.
  • Experience implementing and validating real-time algorithms on embedded platforms.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • An active and existing security clearance is required after day 1.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with embedded Linux and BSP development, including custom Yocto/Petalinux builds and device tree configuration for multi-camera setups.
  • Experience with hardware-software co-design using AMD Xilinx Vitis, integrating hardware pipelines with Linux runtime applications via XRT, and managing Xilinx runtime drivers.
  • Experience with video pipelines and multimedia frameworks, including the Linux media subsystem and optimizing pipelines for low-latency, parallel camera streams.
  • Experience utilizing AI-aided development tools to accelerate debugging, scripting, or firmware generation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software system architecture for a dual-layer processing pipeline on a Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, ensuring high-throughput, ultra-low latency, and deterministic video pipelines.
  • Collaborate with the firmware team to partition workloads and determine which signal processing algorithms should be offloaded to FPGA hardware versus executed in software.
  • Review code, validate algorithm behavior, and provide actionable feedback to influence engineering practices and maintain steady program execution.
  • Provide systems-level architectural support, including developing CONOPS, specification tree structures, and multi-CSCI decomposition to address customer-critical issues.
  • Apply system-of-systems architecture expertise to inter-CSCI and LRU interfaces, requirement flows, and hardware/software integration.
  • Collaborate with senior systems engineers and cross-functional technical leads to support integration and verification efforts.
  • Implement and validate real-time algorithms while supporting software and hardware integration on embedded platforms.
  • Translate technical considerations into actionable guidance and foster collaboration across engineering teams.
  • Guide technical development, mentor engineers, and lead software teams through complex lifecycle activities.
