Principal Scientist, (NMR Spectroscopist)

GSKUpper Providence, PA
Onsite

About The Position

GSK has an immediate opening for an NMR spectroscopist in research and development at our site in Collegeville, PA. The NMR team is accountable for all NMR applications in support of drug discovery and development from lead identification to marketing authorization applications. This includes structural characterization of new chemical entities, synthetic intermediates, impurities, and degradants, characterization of physical form with solid state NMR, as well as development of NMR methodology for novel applications in biologics. The NMR team maintains seven NMR instruments ranging from 400 MHz to 700 MHz including solid state NMR capability, and also five additional walk-up NMR’s for use within Medicinal Chemistry and Process Chemistry groups. The NMR team sits within a broader, multi-disciplinary analytical group responsible for structural characterization of small molecule synthetic drugs and biologics such as monoclonal antibodies by mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, and other biophysical techniques as well as stress testing/forced degradation studies. Our group supports the development of innovative and quality medicines for patients through cutting-edge analytical science.

Requirements

  • PhD in NMR spectroscopy or related area (or Master’s degree with equivalent experience)
  • Experience with solution phase NMR experiments, including ability to apply 1D, 2D, and heteronuclear NMR techniques for structural characterization of analytes.
  • Experience with NMR instrumentation hardware and software, including cryoprobes, solid state NMR, and/or low field (benchtop) NMR systems.
  • Experience building and maintaining a state-of-the-art NMR laboratory.
  • Two or more years of experience as primary or contributing author of reports and regulatory dossiers.

  • Demonstrated expertise in modern NMR pulse sequence programming and AU/macro programming on Bruker spectrometers.
  • Experience in structure elucidation software (e.g. ACD) for NMR.
  • Ability to comply with the requirements of Quality, Safety and GSK policies and procedures and ensure that GSK intellectual property is protected.
  • Experience in solving challenging problems in NMR.
  • Working knowledge of application of NMR to structural characterization of biologics such as monoclonal antibodies.
  • Working knowledge of low field (benchtop) NMR applications and methodology development.
  • Working knowledge of solid state NMR instrumentation and experiments.
  • Expertise in automated sample preparation, acquisition, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of closely related scientific disciplines as they apply to drug discovery and development (e.g. mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, XRPD, any other techniques) and ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate scientific data and spectroscopic/spectrometric techniques other than NMR to help determine the structure of analytes.
  • Excellent communication skills and teamwork behaviors.
  • Experience with the overall drug development process, including regulatory file authoring and GxP requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Digital, Data and Analytics principles, tools, and approaches.
