About The Position

Leidos’ Security Enterprise Solutions (SES) operation is seeking a motivated and talented Principal Scientist to join our multidisciplinary, highly energized, and expert data science team. We are seeking a Principal Scientist to lead our computational sensing intelligence team and work with a team of talented research scientists, data scientists, and machine learning engineers on data science solutions for our portfolio of products that help safeguard security checkpoints and ports and border crossings worldwide. The ideal candidate is a senior level subject matter expert who excels at understanding requirements defined by business needs and crafting solutions that are ready to be delivered to a product deployment team. A track record of excellence in management of scientists and algorithm developers is also desired.

Requirements

  • MS or Ph.D. in Data Science, Engineering, Applied Science/Mathematics, Statistics, or a similar discipline and a minimum of 10 years of industry experience
  • Expert understanding of data science concepts such as artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, machine learning, experimentation, and analytics
  • Hands-on experience with CNN-based machine learning architectures, e.g., ResNet, Yolo, U-Net
  • Familiarity in solving inverse problems e.g., iSAR, CT reconstruction, etc.
  • Familiarity working on image segmentation, object detection, and classification for 2D or 3D data sets
  • Ability to evaluate technical readiness of approaches developed internally and in academia
  • Guide and influence technical decision-making on projects
  • Experience in functional management of research scientists and algorithm developers
  • Strong track record of delivery ownership and cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to multitask across projects
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Some travel is required in support of projects (< 25%)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust access.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with images from medical, security, or NDT devices
  • Experience defining data science standards and best practices
  • Experience creating and using tools that generate synthetic data for imaging applications
  • Experience working on DHS contracts

Responsibilities

  • Provide functional management to a team of data scientists across varying levels of seniority
  • Own technical delivery outcomes, ensuring tasks are executed on time and aligned to the project requirements
  • Review and influence modeling approaches, experimentation design, and analytical rigor
  • Translate business problems into actionable data science strategies
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders
  • Help define best practices, standards, and reusable patterns for data science work
