VP, Principal Resilience Engineer

Chubb•Readington Township, NJ
•$158,550 - $229,950

About The Position

Chubb’s Community Resilience Initiative focuses on reducing climate-related damage, disruption, and insured losses through building- and community-scale mitigation. The Principal Resilience Engineer provides engineering leadership for the initiative, establishing the technical basis for verified risk reduction and modeled loss reduction that supports resilience investments and informs insurance decisions. The role applies expertise in one or more natural catastrophe perils—including wildfire, coastal and inland flooding, wind, and severe storms—and knowledge of building design, construction, retrofit, and maintenance. It works across Chubb’s risk consulting, underwriting, catastrophe modeling, claims, and analytics teams, and with external partners such as property owners, developers, community associations, local governments, and utilities. The position has a flexible location, with travel expected for project delivery and stakeholder engagements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, coastal, environmental, fire protection, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in engineering design, construction, building performance, natural hazard mitigation, resilience, or related risk engineering work.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more of the following perils: wildfire; coastal flooding; inland flooding; wind, including hurricanes; or severe storms, including hail and tornadoes.
  • Deep knowledge of building design and construction, including materials, structural and envelope systems, construction practices, retrofit methods, and common failure mechanisms.
  • Ability to develop practical engineering solutions that exceed minimum code requirements and address long-term performance under a changing climate.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to influence decisions across disciplines and organizations.
  • Entrepreneurial approach, with comfort defining problems, proposing a path forward, and adapting as evidence and requirements evolve.
  • Willingness to travel for site assessments, project delivery, and partner engagement.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to learn, take direction, and contribute to team success.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience assessing both individual buildings and community systems that influence exposure and performance.
  • Familiarity with catastrophe modeling, property insurance, underwriting, or loss prevention.
  • Experience working with residential communities, HOAs, developers, local governments, utilities, or public infrastructure owners.
  • A record of advancing innovative approaches through technical standards, applied research, pilot projects, or professional leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior technical authority on building and community resilience, bringing expertise in one or more natural catastrophe perils and coordinating specialists across disciplines.
  • Lead field assessments and technical reviews to identify how buildings, sites, infrastructure, and surrounding conditions contribute to damage and loss.
  • Develop prioritized recommendations at property, neighborhood, and community scales, accounting for coordinated action beyond individual property boundaries where needed.
  • Apply performance-based engineering judgment to develop solutions beyond minimum code requirements, considering future climate conditions, asset life, and uncertainty.
  • Translate recommendations into actionable scopes, design criteria, technical guidance, and implementation pathways for property owners and community partners.
  • Partner with catastrophe modelers and analysts to translate physical vulnerabilities and proposed mitigation measures into modeling assumptions and scenarios.
  • Assess whether modeled risk reductions are supported by engineering evidence, field conditions, and observed loss experience; identify limitations and validation needs.
  • Work with underwriting and risk consulting colleagues to define mitigation criteria, documentation, and verification requirements that can inform risk selection, capacity, and other insurance decisions.
  • Support evaluation of mitigation costs against potential reductions in damage, loss, and disruption, communicating uncertainty and remaining exposure.
  • Establish consistent assessment methods, technical review processes, and quality standards that can be applied across communities while accommodating local conditions.
  • Explain technical findings and recommendations to homeowners, community leaders, business partners, and senior executives.
  • Mentor colleagues and turn project findings into practical guidance that strengthens Chubb’s resilience capabilities.
  • Travel for site assessments, project delivery, and partner engagement.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • May be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program.
