About The Position

The Principal R&D Engineer will support the development and expansion of transcatheter heart valve replacement technologies within Medtronic’s Structural Heart portfolio. The role focuses on advanced clinical and preclinical imaging analysis, computational and anatomical modeling, and research for Structural Heart therapies. The engineer will work with engineering, clinical, and scientific teams to analyze cardiovascular imaging datasets, develop predictive models, evaluate device-anatomy interactions, and generate evidence supporting product development, preclinical studies, and future therapy advancement. The Structural Heart group develops transcatheter technologies for valvular heart disease and aortic conditions, including therapies for aortic, pulmonary, mitral, and tricuspid valve disease. The position is based at the Mounds View, Minnesota facility and requires at least four days per week onsite. Travel of up to 10% may be required for business objectives, in-person meetings, and project activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Scientific, Engineering, or Math with at least 7 years of experience; or a master’s degree with at least 5 years of engineering or scientific experience; or a Ph.D. with at least 3 years of engineering or scientific experience.
  • For baccalaureate degrees earned outside the United States, a degree satisfying the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience analyzing cardiovascular imaging data using CT, ultrasound, MRI, or fluoroscopy.
  • Experience with image segmentation, anatomical reconstruction, 3D modeling, CAD software, or quantitative image analysis.
  • Experience developing analytical tools, scripts, or workflows using Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience authoring technical documentation, reports, and presentations supporting research or product development activities.
  • Experience with Structural Heart, transcatheter valve, or cardiovascular medical device development or manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology, and valve disease, including mitral and tricuspid anatomy.
  • Experience with statistical shape modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), or other physics-based modeling techniques.
  • Experience developing or validating machine learning models for medical imaging or anatomy-device interaction analysis.
  • Experience working in regulated medical device environments, including design controls, FDA regulations, Quality System Regulations (QSR), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • In-depth knowledge of the mitral and tricuspid valves and surrounding structures.
  • Experience with catheter-based procedures.
  • Preclinical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze clinical and preclinical imaging datasets, including CT, ultrasound, MRI, and fluoroscopy, to support product development and use-condition assessment.
  • Develop anatomical reconstructions, segmentation workflows, and measurement methodologies using advanced 3D imaging software and analytical tools.
  • Create, validate, and maintain image-processing, measurement, and data-analysis workflows using Python and MATLAB.
  • Develop predictive models and virtual patient assessments to evaluate anatomy-device interactions and support screening methodologies.
  • Partner with modeling, design, testing, and clinical teams on research, feasibility, and product development activities.
  • Generate technical documentation, scientific reports, presentations, and supporting evidence for engineering and research activities.
  • Collaborate with external physicians, researchers, and cross-functional stakeholders to advance Structural Heart technologies and clinical understanding.
