Principal Quality Assurance Engineer, Software Platform Engineering

Questrade Financial GroupToronto, ON
CA$140,000 - CA$160,000Hybrid

About The Position

Questrade Financial Group (QFG) is seeking a Principal Quality Assurance Engineer to design quality into their systems. This role involves shaping the testing strategy for over 80 production services, building automation, and writing code alongside software engineers. It's a hands-on technical position where you will work with senior and principal Quality Engineers and software engineers as peers. You will design, build, and own the test architecture in production, collaborating with other principal Quality Engineers to define platform-wide quality patterns. The role requires three days a week on-site at the North York office, working with Quality Engineers, software engineers, and product leads. The team utilizes AI tools like Cursor, Claude, and Gemini daily for tasks such as generating test suites, analyzing failures, mining logs, and increasing efficiency. You will act as the quality champion across the delivery track, providing an analytical view of initiatives, making judgments on where quality investment is most crucial, and adapting to shifting priorities. The team is looking for someone who identifies and addresses gaps proactively, as automation coverage is currently uneven and there is work to be done on tooling and patterns.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated, hands-on fluency with AI development tools: Cursor, Claude, Gemini, or equivalents, with evidence of AI-assisted test suites shipped, effective prompting strategies, or workflow integrations.
  • 8+ years in software quality with a track record of owning quality at the platform or system level.
  • Track record of making quality investment decisions across multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Strong hands-on coding ability, writing production-grade automation.
  • Comfortable in C# / .NET and TypeScript.
  • Hands-on experience with Cypress and Playwright, or deep expertise in one with proven ability to ramp on the other.
  • Deep practical knowledge of testing distributed, event-driven systems: contract testing, integration patterns, async flows, idempotency edge cases, and failure modes at scale.
  • Experience designing performance test strategies for real production workloads, with data analysis skills.
  • Comfortable with in-person collaboration in North York three days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Pub/Sub, Cloud Run, and observability tooling.
  • Experience with chaos engineering or fault injection in production-like environments.
  • Background in compliance-driven QA in regulated domains (financial services, fintech, healthcare).
  • Open-source contributions, blog posts, or a portfolio demonstrating quality thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Use AI tools like Cursor, Claude, and Gemini as a core part of your daily workflow for test strategy drafting, failure pattern analysis, log mining, and coverage gap identification.
  • Own the end-to-end quality strategy across the event-driven, domain-driven platform, including contract testing between services, integration coverage across domains, end-to-end flows, performance baselines, synthetic monitoring, and production observability for quality signals.
  • Partner with other principal Quality Engineers to shape test architecture across domains, share ownership of platform-wide quality patterns, and maintain a high standard.
  • Build and maintain test automation frameworks, harnesses, and shared libraries.
  • Write production-grade automation code in C# / .NET and TypeScript, working with Cypress and Playwright for UI and integration automation.
  • Design and run performance tests to establish baselines, surface regressions early, and partner with engineers to address root causes.
  • Lead investigations when issues arise, instrument missing components, find the actual cause, write tests to prevent recurrence, and ensure issues do not escape.
  • Communicate quality trade-offs clearly to both engineers and product leads.

Benefits

  • Health & wellbeing resources and programs.
  • Paid vacation, personal, and sick days.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits packages.
  • Comprehensive benefits plan.
  • Competitive incentive (bonus) program.
