About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Principal Protection Electrical Engineer with a Protective Relaying emphasis for their Orlando, FL office. Candidates for their Augusta, ME; Freeport, ME; Syracuse, NY, Charlotte, NC; Overland Park, KS; and Richmond, VA offices will also be considered. The ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location will be considered. Be involved in projects with their Electrical Studies, SCADA, and Protection (ESSP) team and be a part of a growing organization that meets clients' objectives and solves their challenges. WSP brings global expertise in power delivery, power generation, and program management—anchored by the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc. TRC Companies have now joined WSP, deepening their power practice and expanding their energy advisory and intelligent grid services. They are partnering with clients to shape how energy systems evolve around the world. The successful applicant will have a direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system. This includes the protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, and distribution systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited).
  • 15+ years of relevant post education experience as an electrical engineer executing deliverables for Protective Relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility or industrial scale.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license (multi-state preferred).
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a proven history of completing similar projects in a consulting environment.
  • Preference may be given to engineers with commissioning and testing experience, or strong skills in protecting equipment at high voltages (69kV and higher).
  • Preference is also given to applicants with experience mentoring others and a willingness to do so.

Responsibilities

  • Protective Relaying: Symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and integration with SCADA systems.
  • Protection Analyses: Electrical model development, short circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, NERC compliance, and event analysis
  • Team Leadership: Lead teams on client projects to meet the scope, schedule, and budget. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Client Leadership: Maintain and build client relationships through understanding client needs, providing technical and process solutions, delivering high quality work, and meeting commitments.
  • Data Acquisition: Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and able to discuss project specifics at appropriate technical level for clients.
  • Industry Standards: Working knowledge or awareness of applicable industry practices for protection as outlined in IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards for design work.
  • Organized: Flexibility to support a variety of project schedules to meet client needs and able to prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Applicable software: AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, ASPEN Oneliner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, RSCAD
  • Applicable hardware: SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, Beckwith, RTDS
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
