Principal Product Manager (NGFW Hardware Platform)

Palo Alto Networks•Santa Clara, CA
•$176,800 - $286,000

About The Position

Palo Alto Networks is seeking a technically deep Principal Product Manager to lead strategy, roadmap, and lifecycle execution for its flagship modular chassis platforms, with a focus on the PA-7500 Series. The role defines the future of high-throughput modular Next-Generation Firewalls for data center, service provider, and campus environments. Its scope includes chassis architecture, custom silicon and ASIC acceleration, high-density interfaces, power and thermal efficiency, and modular management, data, switch-fabric, and processing cards. The Product Manager is the primary cross-functional bridge among Hardware Engineering, PAN-OS Software, Operations, and Global Sales, working to deliver performant, reliable, and scalable security platforms. The position leads products from architecture and concept through new-product introduction, commercial production, and end-of-life, while managing product requirements, business models, cost, margins, SKUs, and pricing. It also engages customers and manufacturing partners and ensures platform integration with Palo Alto Networks’ software and management ecosystem. Most teams work from the office full time, with flexibility when needed.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of product management experience focused on high-performance networking, modular chassis switches or routers, or enterprise/carrier-grade hardware platforms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical credential.
  • Deep understanding of modern server and networking hardware architectures, including custom ASICs, FPGAs, x86/ARM CPUs, high-speed SerDes, switch fabrics, and hardware offload architectures.
  • Strong technical background in 100G/400G+ network interfaces, L2–L4 switching and routing architectures, and data-center deployment topologies.
  • Proven success taking complex modular hardware systems from initial architecture definition through new product introduction to high-volume commercial production.
  • Experience managing complex hardware BOM costs, gross margins, supply-chain trade-offs, and enterprise hardware pricing structures.
  • Exceptional communication and executive presentation skills, with the ability to influence hardware and software engineering teams without direct authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or an MBA.
  • Experience delivering modular data-center firewalls, carrier-grade edge platforms, or high-end spine/leaf switching fabrics.
  • Direct exposure to power and thermal design trade-offs, NEBS compliance, and data-center sustainability standards.
  • Familiarity with hardware-based cryptographic acceleration, TLS/SSL decryption engines, and hardware Root of Trust or secure-boot architectures.
  • Experience working directly with enterprise data-center architects, telecommunications carriers, and hyperscale cloud providers.

Responsibilities

  • Define the long-term vision, roadmap, and hardware platform strategy for the PA-7500 modular chassis portfolio and next-generation high-end hardware platforms.
  • Partner with hardware, ASIC/FPGA, and software architecture teams to define specifications for compute engines, network switch fabrics, memory subsystems, and high-speed optics and interconnects.
  • Drive requirements for custom ASICs, hardware offload engines, and cryptographic acceleration to deliver multi-terabit Layer 7 inspection, App-ID, and Threat Prevention performance.
  • Author product requirement documents and user stories; lead cross-functional execution across hardware engineering, board design, firmware, thermal and power engineering, PAN-OS, and QA from concept through end-of-life.
  • Own hardware business models, bill of materials cost optimization, gross margins, SKU definition, and pricing for chassis, fan trays, power supplies, and modular processing cards.
  • Engage enterprise, financial services, government, and telecommunications customers to identify architectural pain points, capacity-scaling needs, and green-energy and data-center footprint constraints.
  • Collaborate with supply chain, operations, and external ODM/JDM manufacturing partners on component availability, design for manufacturability, and reliable production scale.
  • Ensure integration with PAN-OS, Strata Cloud Manager, Panorama, and AIOps tools for chassis telemetry, environmental monitoring, and fault management.
  • Use generative AI and modern analytics to improve data-driven decision-making, competitive modeling, and roadmap execution.

Benefits

  • The compensation may include restricted stock units and a bonus.
  • Employee benefits are referenced, but specific benefits are not listed in the posting.
