Principal Product Manager, Telemetry Collection - Observability

Elastic
CA$154,000 - CA$243,600Remote

About The Position

The Observability team is responsible for developing solutions tailored for application developers and engineers who manage infrastructure and services. Elasticsearch serves as an efficient datastore for logs, metrics, and application traces, supporting the core pillars of observability. This team builds and maintains solutions that simplify and optimize the process of gaining insights from this data, including APM, Infrastructure Monitoring, Logs, and Uptime solutions. Their development process considers the entire lifecycle, from agent and collector management to efficient data collection, storage in Elasticsearch, and seamless management across distributed architectures. As a Principal Product Manager for Telemetry Collection within the Observability team, you will lead the strategy and execution for edge telemetry collectors and remote management capabilities. Your responsibilities will include defining the vision for Fleet Server, Elastic Agent, and the Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry (EDOT), as well as traditional log shippers like Filebeat, the Beats ecosystem, and Logstash. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about creating scalable collector management systems and enabling users to easily manage enterprise-grade telemetry pipelines.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years in a Product Management role with a specific focus on enterprise infrastructure observability, telemetry collection, or agent frameworks.
  • Deep technical familiarity with collectors, log shippers, and agent ecosystems such as the OpenTelemetry Collector, Elastic Agent, Filebeat/Beats, and Logstash.
  • Proven track record in defining requirements for remote agent management, fleet control planes, or distributed edge collection systems.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes operators and Helm Charts, alongside a solid understanding of cloud-native orchestration and release management.
  • Expertise in OpenTelemetry standards, receivers/exporters, and OpenTelemetry Collector architectures.
  • Experience working closely with open-source communities and navigating the balance between upstream contributions and enterprise product requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical architectures into clear business goals.
  • Familiarity with modern AI productivity tools and an understanding of emerging AI technology stacks and telemetry requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a distributed team throughout the world.
  • Strong familiarity with the Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, Beats).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience on the front lines of IT Ops, DevOps, or SRE, or a customer-facing solution architect / consultant background is ideal.

Responsibilities

  • Define the product vision, go-to-market strategy, and execution roadmap for the Elastic Agent framework, Fleet Server/Service, and telemetry collectors.
  • Define and track KPIs focused on agent deployment success, pipeline efficiency, and the adoption of OTel distributions.
  • Oversee the packaging, testing, and distribution of the Elastic Agent, including the Elastic Distribution for OpenTelemetry Collector (EDOT) and standalone, purpose-specific Elastic Agent-based distributions.
  • Drive remote management capabilities for Elastic Agent, Fleet Server, and collector infrastructure to ensure smooth deployment, configuration, and control at scale.
  • Lead the vision and release strategy for cloud-native deployments, focusing on Kubernetes operators and Helm Charts for seamless provisioning and lifecycle management of the agent framework.
  • Advance OpenTelemetry as a primary data shipper, guiding the development of receivers and exporters across Elastic Agent (EDOT) and the upstream OpenTelemetry Collector project to meet enterprise requirements.
  • Manage Filebeat (as an Elastic Agent–managed OTel receiver, or standalone binary) and oversee the maintenance of the Beats repository.
  • Lead product initiatives for Logstash, focusing on improved supportability, performance, and customer-requested enhancements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, UX, and product marketing to deliver compelling central management and collector experiences.
  • Act as a key spokesperson for Elastic’s agent framework, collector ecosystem, and collection capabilities at internal and external events.
