Principal Product Manager, Payer & Outcomes Data

Headway
β€’$300,000 - $375,000

About The Position

Headway's mission is to fix the mental healthcare system by building a new system that everyone can access. They have automated the administrative work for providers, such as credentialing, claims, and payment reconciliation. Over 75,000 providers use their software, serving over 1 million patients. Headway is building tools for therapists to manage their practices, improving the process of finding a therapist, and investing in platform foundations for scalability. They are a Series D company with over $325M in funding from investors like a16z, Accel, and Spark Capital. The Payer & Patient Outcomes team at Headway is evolving the company's relationship with payers from a credentialing and billing partner to a network that can demonstrate its value. This team is responsible for building the products, data infrastructure, and measurement frameworks that allow Headway to present evidence of the clinical outcomes they drive, for specific patient populations, and at a certain cost. They operate at the intersection of clinical strategy, data engineering, and commercial aspects, building novel infrastructure for behavioral health at scale. This role focuses on the foundational problem of building the data layer to make every Headway patient understandable in terms of their clinical segment, expected outcomes, and cost relative to alternatives. The team aims to answer critical payer questions: "Is it working? Is it worth it?" The Principal PM will define and ship product systems to bridge this gap, collaborating with data engineering, data science, and clinical strategy to create durable and auditable solutions.

Requirements

  • Owned complex data infrastructure products end-to-end.
  • Deep technical proficiency, including writing complex SQL, engaging with statistical methods, and working closely with data scientists.
  • Experience having cost or outcome claims challenged by external parties (payers, regulators, auditors).
  • Comfort operating without a playbook, setting product strategy in ambiguous domains, and making sharp bets on product direction.
  • Experience aligning engineering, clinical, and commercial stakeholders around a shared data vision without direct reporting lines.
  • Proficiency in defining and shipping product systems.
  • Ability to build something durable and auditable.
  • Understanding of what it takes to make a cost or outcome claim hold up.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with claims data, episode cost modeling, or risk stratification.
  • Transitioned into Product Management from a data science or analytics engineering background.

Responsibilities

  • Define and ship product systems that close the gap in understanding patient outcomes and costs for payers.
  • Build the patient segmentation and stratification infrastructure to classify patients by clinical profile, behavioral signals, and drivers of outcomes, ensuring defensibility and predictability at scale.
  • Develop the cost of care measurement layer by integrating internal and external cost data to provide auditable cost basis and market comparisons for patients and segments.
  • Create payer-facing data products, including reporting and data interfaces, to translate internal infrastructure into payer-legible population summaries for commercial conversations.
  • Define the data strategy for the outcomes team, including build vs. buy decisions, deferrals, and prioritization.
  • Set the architectural vision for the data layer and own cross-functional alignment for its execution.
