The Principal System Engineer is considered a subject matter expert in the enterprise and multiple technology areas, platforms and functions. They are responsible for maintaining a deep awareness and understanding of emerging trends and technologies in IT and Healthcare. Assignments span the enterprise as the principal system engineer will be responsible for standards and technical roadmap development. This senior role focuses on the strategic architecture, administration, and continuous improvement of the organization's network operations tooling ecosystem. The scope includes platforms such as Cisco Catalyst Center, AKIPS, NNMi, OMi, ThousandEyes, and other related network management, monitoring, and observability technologies. Key Technical Leadership Responsibilities: Platform Lifecycle Management: Serve as the senior technical authority for the planning, design, implementation, integration, support, and lifecycle management of these enterprise platforms. Ensure they meet organizational requirements for availability, performance, scalability, data integrity, and operational effectiveness. Platform Focus Areas: Specific platform responsibilities cover network performance monitoring, synthetic and path visibility, event and fault management, telemetry collection, alerting, and operational reporting. Advanced Expertise: Requires advanced expertise in systems administration for network performance management and operations platforms, along with a strong foundation in data management practices crucial for monitoring, correlation, reporting, and operational decision-making. Enterprise Architecture and Strategy: Future-State Vision: Operate at an enterprise architect level to define and advance the future-state vision for modern network operations capabilities. Strategy and Roadmap: Develop the technical strategy and roadmap for telemetry, event correlation, observability, intelligent alerting, automation, and AIOps-relevant functions to enhance operational maturity and service reliability. Architectural Standards: Establish architectural standards and integrated solutions to improve the collection, normalization, analysis, and correlation of operational data across network platforms and services. Collaboration and Operational Model: Collaborate with infrastructure, operations, application, and leadership teams to enable a more proactive, data-driven, and scalable network operations model, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and enterprise technology standards. Essential Functions: Develops organizational policies, standards, and guidelines for methods and tools. Sets direction and leads in the introduction and use of techniques, methodologies and tools, to match overall business requirements, ensuring consistency across all user groups. Leads the development of organizational capabilities for methods and tools (including automation) to ensure adoption and adherence to policies, standards and processes. Determines testing policy, and owns the supporting processes including software security testing. Manages all risks associated with the testing and takes preventative action when any risks become unacceptable. Initiates improvements to test processes and directs their implementation. Assesses suppliers' development and testing capabilities. Determines project testing standards for all phases, influencing all parties to conform to those standards. Sets the release policy for the organization in the context of both development and production/operations. Ensures that management processes, tools, techniques and resources (including automation) are in place to ensure that the transition of services, service components and packages are planned and compliant and that test and validation and configuration management are partnered in all release and deployment activities. Provides authorization for critical release activity and point of escalation. Maintain primary responsibility for strategic planning, technical roadmap development, standards and architecture. Oversees efforts with key vendors to understand future application product plans in conjunction with IT leadership. Perform project resourcing, oversight and management. In conjunction with the Director and/or Manager, coaches the team on personal development and develops training strategies and schedules. Initiates methods and approaches to meet defined business objectives. Resolves subtle complexities that often have significant implications for program’s overall success. Works on, and may lead, multiple projects that may span the enterprise. Identify automation opportunities and implement scripted solutions. Serves as an escalation point for complex requests and issues. Provide overall ownership of the Change Management process for the System Engineer team. Provide exceptional customer service to CommonSpirit end users, Business Stakeholders and other members of CommonSpirit ITD. Act as primary conduit to oversee support efforts between System Engineering and other CommonSpirit Health teams, and provide escalation and resolution functions when necessary. Schedule and manage all performance tuning and troubleshooting efforts. Review, recommend and monitor the source code/versioning management function adhering to technical management guidelines. Provide overall technical ownership for all support and project issues and responsibilities within the System Engineering teams. Design, implement and maintain a comprehensive monitoring and alerting process across all Technology Infrastructure platforms. Utilize standard tools and methodology to develop system and support performance metrics. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge & expertise with CommonSpirit business processes and routines. Perform crisis management during high-severity operational incidents. Perform meeting facilitation for staff, operational support and project meetings. Act as the primary lead. Complete assignments as required by the Director / Manager and work effectively with all levels of leadership. May require on-call coverage responsibilities. Remote eligible.
