About The Position

Google’s innovative search and AI technologies connect millions of people with information every day. The Android XR team is extending this mission into the physical world by creating the ultimate spatial computing platform. As a Principal Multimodal LLM Research Scientist, you will lead the research that defines the future of spatial intelligence. You will lead a team of researchers to push the boundaries of deep learning, pre-training, and multimodal understanding. Your research will directly influence the core capabilities of Google’s XR products, enabling them to understand complex, multi-sensory environments and interact with users in natural, context-aware ways. The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Computer Science, AI, Physics) or equivalent practical experience.
15 years of experience in deep learning research, with a focus on multimodal or language models.
Experience leading research teams and delivering technological innovations.
Experience with modern deep learning frameworks and distributed training on clusters.

Nice To Haves

PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field with a focus on Multimodal AI or Computer Vision.
Ability to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation on consumer-facing hardware.
Deep specialized expertise in state-of-the-art multimodal pre-training strategies and transformer-based architectures.
Significant publication record in venues demonstrating leadership in the AI research community.

Responsibilities

Lead a research agenda focused on state-of-the-art multimodal pre-training, architecture design, and novel deep learning techniques for spatial computing.
Develop groundbreaking models that integrate vision, audio, and sensor data to provide a unified understanding of the physical world.
Publish original research in machine learning and computer vision conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, CVPR, ICML) to advance the field and represent Google’s leadership.
Translate fundamental research breakthroughs into scalable technical strategies for the Android XR product organization.
Mentor research scientists and engineers, providing technical direction and fostering an environment of high-impact innovation.
