About The Position

This is a hybrid position that requires onsite work three per week at our Towson, MD campus. The Principal Model Based Controls Engineer leads the design, development, simulation, and implementation of advanced control systems using model-based engineering tools such as MATLAB/Simulink. This central role collaborates and provides technical leadership and governance support across all strategic business units across Stanley Back & Decker. As a Principal Model Based Design Engineer, you’ll be part of our Tools and Outdoor Team working as a hybrid employee.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Control Systems, or a related field (PhD preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in control systems development, with significant expertise in model-based design.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development methodologies.
  • Proven experience with various control methods (i.e. PID, MIMO, Non-Linear, MPC).
  • Experience with MIL, SIL, and HIL testing environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with field-oriented control methods for brushless motor control highly preferred.
  • Strong background in embedded software development and system integration a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy and governance model for design, modeling, and simulation of control systems using model-based engineering tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Lead new initiatives around advanced workflows including advanced control algorithms for complex systems (e.g., automotive, HVAC, robotics, or industrial automation).
  • Oversee Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing methods to verify and validate control strategies.
  • Guide architecture design and embedded software development for control systems.
  • Ensure seamless integration of control solutions with broader system modeling and simulation.
  • Plan and conduct non-advocate design reviews to validate solutions and enforce quality standards.
  • Mentor and train engineers, promoting best practices in model-based design and controls engineering.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and research institutions to drive technology advancements.
  • Document control strategies, simulation results, and validation processes.
  • Support certification and regulatory compliance for global deployment.
